I just recently changed out my Linksys WRT54g v8 router to a Netgear WNR1000 router. I was wondering if I could use the WRT54g router as a repeater to extend my wifi signal from the living room to the other side of the house. Could anyone possibly direct me in the right direction to do this? Also, should I had made the change or should I revert back to using the WRT54g and using the WNR1000 as the repeater? Or should I set up either router as another access point? Let me know what would be the best option

It's been a while since I used a router as a bridge, but If I remember correctly, you want to set the wrt54g to bridge the connection, and disable dhcp (so the main router can do it). Give the old router a static IP, and reserve it in the new router. (This prevents DHCP from assigning it to something else.)
Then, on the wireless part of the Linksys, set it to have a (preferably WPA2 secured) access point with the same SSID and password as the new one.
Your devices will see one network, and connect to whichever access point is closer.
Edit: I'm talking about using Ethernet to connect the two routers. Unless you use WD-DRT or Tomato (the router firmware, not the vegetable), you can't use them as repeaters, only bridges. Keep in mind that there is a risk of bricking your router when doing this, and you will void your warranty (it's probably long expired on the Linksys though). Not all routers are supported. (That said, the WRT54G was a popular model, so I don't think you'll have issues with that.)

It will basically depend on the router. A few routers have this functionality built-in but most do not (FWIW, Apple routers will do this, but BOTH routers need to be Apple routers to my knowledge...it is possible that a non-Apple router that supports WDS might work as well...I have had this setup for years using a Time Capsule as my main router and an AirPort Express as the "repeater"). Some routers might be able to gain this function with third party firmware like mentioned.
As mentioned, the more common option is to "bridge" the two routers using with an ethernet cable such that the second router is essentially extending your network.

It depends on which Version of WRT-54G you have. As I recall, this feature is DISabled in Version 5.
