So much for my original plan to wait for the reviews.....

It's supposed to be delivered by Oct 26, and of course I'll posting with my impressions.

Talk about bleeding edge! I can't wait to hear the results.

Yeah, too much credit and too little impulse control.

I'm looking forward to running Win8 on a touch screen.

I will be interested to see what you think of it. In particular, what you think about the touch keyboard cover.

Although, I am actually more interested in the Surface Pro (even though I don't have the spare cash to buy one).

I am also interested to see how well it does overall. The pricing is technically a little less than an iPad (the "base" model is the same price as the "base" iPad model, but its storage is on par with one level of "upgrade" of the iPad), but I am not sure it is aggressive enough to overcome "inertia" of typical users gravitating to iPads (especially if Apple does in fact announce/release an iPad "mini" at the October 23rd event). I definitely think it has the potential to do well, but I know that I am not smart enough to predict the future. ;)

Just curious: aside from the lower pricing, why did you buy the RT version when it lacks any compatibility with existing x86 programs, and there aren't that many apps in the store right now?

I too am curious about the touch keyboard. If it works as advertised it should be pretty slick.

I debated briefly about the Pro version but opted for the RT for several reasons. Primarily, I was drawn toward the thinner and lighter, passively cooled RT, especially since it comes bundled with all of the Office apps I use for work on a day-to-day basis. For play it also has the apps I use regularly on the road, like Netflix, and I'm certain it will have a Kindle app (since my WP7 phone has one). Finally, I have a good desktop for gaming and the other resource-intensive stuff. With all that I didn't see the need to really kill my computer allowance on the Pro version (it's severely wounded as it is :D ).

See reply to smax :D

Edit: Also, although I probably could have purchased a Pro version for much less from a vendor like Acer I decided that for once I was going to treat myself to some quality hardware, which I'm sure the Surface will be.

The Thinkpad Tablet 2 starts at $629 though. Granted, it is an Atom (Clover Trail), but from what I've seen so far, I'm not sure that'll be an issue under Windows 8. (not that ARM processors are all that powerful in general)

Anyway, tell us how it goes when you get it! :)

And I'm sure the Thinkpad is a very good device, it just was not what I wanted. I was attracted to the novel keyboard, the magnesium chassis, the 10.6 display, the kickstand, etc., and I opted for the 64GB model because I didn't want to be kicking myself later for being penny wise and pound foolish.

I will be interested to see how much better it is to use a touch cover keyboard than an on screen keyboard. In other words, I am curious to see how much "tactile" feedback there is as to key locations. I don't know if/when I will be able to "lay hands" on one myself since Microsoft is only selling them through their own stores and I don't know of any such stores within 200 miles of me, let alone 20 miles.

If I were to serious consider getting one, it would be to basically take the place of what my iPad and MBA combined do for me. Thus, I would want the Surface Pro so that I could run my structural software on it if need be.

Way to go comp. :D Be interesting to see how that goes with first hand reports. I have no new gadgets in my future. The last was my LG Spectrum phone. :D I know about that too much credit and too little impulse control. :P :D

I just noticed that all three versions (3GB without touch cover, 32GB with touch cover, and 64GB with touch cover) have delayed shipping now rather than delivery by the 26th. Looks like I got in under the wire for the early delivery. :)

Naturally nobody at MS is talking numbers but the appearance is that the Surface RTs are selling well...

...or they just built five of each.

I'm curious as to how many were actually bought (numbers), since the average consumer hasn't even heard of it and is probably wondering why they should buy it over, say, an iPad at a similar price. Maybe Microsoft underestimated demand?

Best response ever.
