Do people make any effort to think? Go to the desktop and under the power option listing set your computers power button to shut down the computer.
This does not even require any clicking at all. IThere are those who would rather complain than actually figure anything out. This is the same setting I have used for the all versions of Windows.

Yes, they do. They "think" enough to ditch Windows for Linux.
And yes, there are. They are the target audience for Windows. The main advantage of Windows over its competitors has always been the ease of use, the fact that the average user buys a product that works straight out of the box, and if something goes wrong all he has to do (and all he can do, frankly) is wait for MS to come up with a patch/solution/update. If the average Windows user has to do an internet research in order to "figure out" how to shut down his computer, there's nothing to stop him from "figuring out" some other things, such as how there are other OS's out there and they're not as complicated as the one that he had to figure out how to shut down.

I'm not saying Linux is perfect (or better than Windows), I'm just saying that if you market a product on its simplicity you might as well make it simple to begin with.

As far as I can determine this discussion is not abbout the virtues of Linux vs Windows(and I have installed numerous versions of Linux). The point of this discussion is that some people want to bad mouth Windows 8.without making any real effort to work with it. The power button shut down option has always been in Windows, and is one of the first option that I enable, on at least 15 computers that I have set up for myself, and my family, and and assorted relatives and friends. Without debating the virtues of any particular operating syststem, they all have to have the the user make an effort to become familiar them . That is the same reason that they used to offer driving training classes in high school. By the way, I am 59 and have only been using computrs since 1997

It's stupid that we even need an article on this. Talk about poor design by Microsoft...

How many people want to shut down ther computer remotely? That would require that computer is left on while you leave it sitting at home or office. This is obviously not good security practice ,and a waste of electricity.

Why is this poor design? I prefer the desktop mode for most everday use, but all you have to do is click on the desktop tile after boot up. Is this really too much effort?

One of many reasons to just avoid Windows-8 and stick with Windows-7. When a company teases its users, clearly it doesn't respect them.

Or simply press [ctrl][alt][del] then click on the [power-button]. Just like in Windows 7, and also Windows Vista, and also Windows XP and also Windows 2000 and also ...

To some, this is rocket science, alas.

BTW: When was [ctrl][alt][del] implemented into Windows already?

So it is different. Who cares. The bulk of the users out there never shut down the PC anyways, so why is this a problem? Those that do shut it down I am sure can learn how to do it. It isn't hard, it is just different. I love it how people hate M$ for not changing anything or innovating, but they change a button and everyone is up in arms as if they've killed baby jesus or something.

I suppose many Windows users have never shutdown their computers, ever? Or are they merely too daft to comprehend and remember what a child of five understands easily?
