It's only "free" if your time is worth nothing, and I'm perfectly prepared to believe that _your_ time is worthless, you ignoramus.

As a desktop-only user, I have no plans to upgrade to Windows 8,. And I have to wonder why Microsoft has apparently been working overtime to disable third-party programs that restore a Windows 7-style start menu and desktop to the new OS. Why are they so rabid about preventing users from customizing their experience as they wish?

I've been running Windows 8 Pro since August (downloaded from Technet) and I have to say that while I'm not crazy about the interface formerly called Metro I've grown to like it. The desktop is largely the same and Aero Glass has been reduced to Aero Lite so it's not completely gone. Native support for USB 3.0 is definitely a big plus.

I agree that Windows 8 isn't for everyone-especially desktop users running Windows 7 without any problems-but for those who are curious about the new OS they should give it a try.

After using the Windows 8 Release Preview and the versions before it for quite a while, I have grown to like and accept the 'Don't-call-it-Metro' interface . I think the upgrade is worthwhile, considering that the boot up time has been significantly improved.

some people always complain, if MS sticks with the old desktop style of Windows 7 they call it dinosaur, if it boldly move to a new touch friendly interface they complain again. Personally I love the new OS and definitely I upgrade my main machine.

Saying that Windows is trash is a bit annoying because people have done and do great things with this operating system every day. Things that benefit YOU even if you're on Ubuntu. (Think of all the websites you visit that someone created while in Windows). You should respect it's existence even if it's not what you use personally.

Windows 8 is the sign of a scared, desperate company. If Microsoft learns its lessons after this fiasco, Windows 9 should be fabulous.

Yeah, I installed the Release Preview and started using it as my main daily OS. I found more to love about it every day, and eventually I had pretty much decided to stick with it, and probably upgrade when it releases.
Then I found out that it won't run Minecraft.
I've used Windows 7 ever since.

Yup, free but next to useless.

Until companies start releasing pro apps for linux, it's not worth the headache.

I'm not really big on Windows 8. Been playing around with it since the Dev preview and while good under the hood, the UI changes just don't make sense without a built in "windows classic" selection mode like the good old days. I am reminded about the phrase "putting lipstick on a pig," except in this case, it's putting mud on a supermodel and sending her down the runway. It doesn't matter how good she is underneath, you just can't get past the mud.

Anyway, I booted up my old IBM running Windows 3.0 and was struck by the familiar screen that popped up after boot. Seems to me Microsoft took 5 steps back on the default UI:

Oh yeah, sorry about that - 3.0 is in black and white while Win8 has color. That makes all the difference! I can take a pic of 3.1 and add a clutter of icons if that helps you out any.

I'm a diehard Windows 7 user & advocate. With that being said. I don't hate Windows 8 but I certainty don't love it.

I like the thought behind the Metro interface. It's clean and tiles are updated and easy to work with. The "desktop" is ok. I don't like that some functionality has been stripped to accommodate Metro.

Anyone who is a Right-Click ***** (like me) will initially be quite annoyed. It's like learning to be a lefty when you do everything as a righty. You'll find yourself in the Vista mindset all over again. The ol' "Where the hell is everything?"

I've noticed myself having many...many brain freezes. As in " I know what I want to do, now how the hell do I do it?" or "How do I do what I just did...again?"

I do like IE10. I like the layout & content of information via News/Sports. There seems to be quite a few more options in the file windows. Similar to Office's ribbon feature.

I've only been tinkering with it for about 2 days. I have it running in a virtual environment so I can easily tuck my tail between my legs and crawl back to Windows 7 when my ego gets bruised.

I have tried the new windows 8 and I can say for sure that it is not for me. I use a PC not a tablet. Microsoft made a huge mistake with this and forcing a tablet operating system on PC users. At least Microsoft made it easier for me to make the decision to move to a new Apple computer. I have used Windows since the first version came out in the early 80's and this is by far the worst version that I have encountered. At least I have found out how much better the Apple operation system is than Windows.

Using that logic - EVERY OS since Windows 3.0 is just like it...

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" -- Isaac Asimov

I wish I could click "recommend" like 30 times. Windows 8's start screen looks less like his Win 3.0 picture than just about every OS ever invented. Even iOS looks more like it than Windows 8. Some people are so desperate to bash Windows 8 that I believe they lose their grip on reality.

It's apparent that operating systems are evolving and it's a matter of time before they are all touch operated. Had Apple done it first, it would have been "cutting-edge, bold, revolutionary." But since it's Microsoft, it's confusing. It seems that those most "confused" are the tech specialist, whoa actually have a bias. The fact is the more objective and fact based articles a person reads, the less confusing Windows 8 becomes. I think the younger crowd will love Windows 8. Replacing mouse clicks and keyboard shortcuts with a touch seems very sensible. That being said, with any new transcending OS there will be a learning curve. It's just a matter of time before Apple follows suit. Let's see how confusing that ordeal will be?
