Hello guys!

I am from the Philippines and I subcribed on one of our local cable provider here. I've got a digital cable box and I am wondering if someone could help me how to record live tv shows being aired and save it from my PC. I attached a photo of my digital cable box. I would appreciate if you could give me a step by step to set it up (wires, things to buy, etc.)

Hope to have replies coming from you guys!

Thanks a lot!

At a minimum, you should be able to get a computer "video capture"/tuner card and then connect to that capture card using at least the video (#2) and audio R/L (#3) outputs (you might be able to use the S-video [#4], component [#11] or coaxial [#10] instead of the video out port depending on how the box is setup/functions). This at a minimum should allow you to record whatever channel the cable box is set to (many capture/tuner cards come with a IR "blaster" that will allow the computer to "control" the cable box).

Note that if any channels happen to be HD channels, you likely will not be able to capture the HD stream in actual HD quality...it will most likely be SD quality.

Essentially what Smax just said covered most of it.

I would recommend locating a media center compliant card, and make sure it includes the IR blaster. Then use Windows media center to record your programming. WMC has an excellent interface, and very accurate program guide. This will ensure you the best possible results.

It is tough to tell what ports are on that card, but from the description it should work in theory. It certainly looks like it includes an "IR blaster" and the description implies that it works with Windows Media Center (assuming you are running a version of Windows with Windows Media Center).

I'm in Philippines too. I am also building a TV capture computer.

I looked at that CD-R King TV capture card. It's a PCI card. Do you have an unused PCI slot on your mobo? The CD-R King capture card will work, But it looks like it's for analog NTSC TV ONLY!!! Most cable providers here still use NTSC, so the card will work until Phils. converts to 100% digital TV.

To "Future Proof" your computer, you might want to consider a TV capture card that can do both NTSC & Digital TV. Also note that in Phils, Not all Digital TV is HDTV. Many digital (& satellite) channels use a NTSC feed & simply convert the signal to digital. You can tell the difference between HDTV & Converted NTSC, because the converted NTSC picture looks fuzzy, compared to a true HDTV signal.

I chose a Hauppage HVR-1600 TV Capture card because it can do both NTSC & Digital TV. With Hauppage you have to check the specs. carefully, because they sell several different versions of each model # & each version has different connectivity. Hauppage cards are quite expensive (for Phils.). I'm sure that you can find many, much cheaper capture cards, but again, Check the specs. carefully.

Good Luck!!!!
