That sounds like a good idea, compnovo. So if I have an Acer Aspire One, with a max reso of 1024 x 600, Windows 8 will never have the Metro interface? That's precisely what I dislke, the Metro interface. Then again, there's a possible problem with the Nx attribute in the Acer; but I have a number of monitors which are 1280 x 1024, so also won't qualify for the Metro; so if I can force Win8 to never use Metro on my other machines which I KNOW will work with Win8, I'd be happier. Sadly, it looks like the 1280 won't disable Metro, but will disable that horrid 'snap', hooray.

Thank you for whatever time you spend, in reply!

If that were the case, sales of 1024x600 screens would be skyrocketing right now. What actually happens is that you still get the metro start menu, with everything unnecessarily hidden as usual in it, but you get an error if you try to launch any metro apps. (and stupidly, if you open a file and that file type is set to launch a metro app, you will only get an error message unless you use 'Open with' or change the default...)

You need 1024x768 to use metro apps at all. 1366x768 is only needed to run 2 side-by-side. So, your 1280x1024 monitors can run one metro app at once, but not 2. (even though those have a lot more real-estate than a 1366x768 screen and the width isn't much less)

Thank you again, Brian!

FYI, the Acer Aspire Ones all sport Intel Integrated Graphics, so I can designate a different monitor as primary. Since I can't disable Metro, the charm of setting it up solo on the Acer pales, and it sounds like to even get rid of the other tiles like componovo said, I'd first have to set it up after enabling a monitor within its desired specs, as primary. That's no big deal. Then I get rid of all those horrible tiles, see what little I can do to set up a desktop background and MY own tiles, none of which will reference Metro apps, which I would never want in my lifetime. Using a local account will disable email, as the only way you can access your online email through Metro is if you have a Microsoft account. (I learned that from another old person in my complex.) So be it, I never plan to use Win8 for email. By the time I'll have to leave XP for internetting, will have converted to Linux.

Not sure what Win8 will EVER be good for, but since it sells now for $125 versus the $67 I paid for the two upgrade DVDs (two sets of two DVDs, 32-bit and 64-bit, both Win8 Pro), it's kinda stupid for me to return the unopened upgrades.

Golly, this whole business is so unecessarily complicated. Can't wait to retire and go back to pencil and paper.   :P

You don't need to have a 1024x768 monitor or higher to complete setup. You ONLY need one for metro APPS (you can use the metro start menu at lower resolutions). Since I doubt you want to run metro apps anyway, that shouldn't be a problem - just uninstall all the metro apps, and then install Classic Shell or something.

BTW, I don't think you need to sign into Windows with a Microsoft/Live account to use the metro email client. As I recall, that particular app forced me to sign in with one, but I was able to add a gmail account after that. (Note: I think the client still doesn't have POP3 support...) In fact, I've never signed into Windows via a Microsoft account.

That's the point, no POP3 support. The only way you can use mail in Win8 is online. So that pretty much kills using Win8's inbuilt mail functions for me, as I only want to use Outlook Express, Outlook, or Thunderbird (which is an Outlook-Express knockoff). Which is fine, I can still use them from the Desktop. Assuming I can tolerate it that long. :)
Wildly Insane Now Dumb Or Willfully Stupid. :)
