This is good news for Mint fans. As Linus has stated, one of the reasons that Linux on the desktop hasn't been a real success is the lack of it being installed on computers being sold.

Granted, Google's Chromebooks are making some headway with sales, but they're not sold as "open source" Linux boxes, rather as a Google Product, which could lead to some confusion for the public.

The Mint store was anticipated, and yes, very good news it is...
The Mint-box is a fabulous alternative to running Mint on the apple mac mini... the previous "Mint-box" ! The foot-print is smaller, the ports are more, the moving parts are less... the Mint-box is the right size, the right power, the right OS, and the right price. Whahoo, can't say enough !
Linus of course is wrong about linux on the desktop for two reasons: 1) the problem is NOT that the OS is not preinstalled, it IS that "corporations" (people's bosses) assign windows preloaded machines at work and the masses match that at home. As more "corporations" allow employees to BYOPC and as more (Steam) games become available then the final shift will occur. And, 2) the linux OS [multiple distros] are being used as desk pcs right now the world over.
What Linus and others mean when they say that Linux has not made it on the desk-top is that money-grubbing software developers and hardware manufacturers have not been able (as yet) to figure out how to use Linux to make Dollar$---as in zillions of them. Micro-Soft had a nice little software/hardware tax regime going there... which is waning [it won't die fast enough] thank goodness. Linux IS a success on the desktop from the developer | user standpoint. I have been using Linux on the desktop as a user | developer successfully now for almost 15 years.
The corporation to watch is HP. They are now a platinum member of the Linux Foundation. Their machines are sweet, and most are very linux friendly. I suspect we'll have less uefi boot problems with HP then most vendors in the near windows 8 future. My family is using only HP laptops, in the g series presently, all running Mint.
Thanks again Katherine for another great article !
Cheers!
