I'm currently in second year software engineering and I'm looking for a laptop that I can haul with me wherever I go. I currently have a 17 inch dell xps and it's like carrying an anvil around. What I'm looking for is a smaller laptop that I can carry with me if I need to. I want it for java programming, C programming and simply for browsing the internet if I need to look up some things so I don't want the keyboard or screen to be too small. A good battery life would also be a plus.

Thank you

The Thinkpad T430 is a good one to look at - 14", 13 hours of battery life with the 9-cell, an option for a 1600x900 screen, a nice keyboard, and an option for Windows 7. If I were getting a laptop for myself as a main machine, it would be 14", which I personally feel is the best balance of usability and portability. That said, I've been happy with my 11" x120e (note that it's really a netbook though), and the x131e and x230 are good smaller options.

The T430/530 series are both decent machines. If you would prefer a higher resolution screen, the W530 is also a solid option. The W530 weighs about 2 lbs less than the xps 17. There are other options of course, the Sony 'S' series for example (though I have issues with their support).

If you are looking for something a bit different, let us know.
