Have installed Windows-8 on my computer - probably a really bad decision by me! Anyway, then tried to install MS VirtualPC v2007 under W8 and am informed not to do it/will not run.

This blocks many legacy apps for me & probably others, certainly many business users. So here I am asking anyone on the forum for advise & assistance = is there a work-around or setting to change somewhere? Anything?

It'll probably still work - it was designed to work on Vista.

That said, nowadays, I would use VMware Player or Virtualbox. (both free)

Thanks for the reply. W8 will not permit installing VirtualPC!
I really like the program but might have to try one of your suggestions - in hopes they will work. The error message W8 provide has something to do with virtualization being disabled, so possibly no other similar program will work ...?

You might want to check the BIOS to see if Virtualization can be enabled. (Note: plenty of CPUs don't have this, and not all BIOSes allow you to enable it.)

Note that the programs I mentioned shouldn't need it though.

While VMware Player and VirtualBox are free, copies of Windows to run in them are not. The advantage of Microsoft's Virtual PC is that it came with a copy of XP.

VPC 2007 didn't - I think you're thinking of Win7 Pro and XP mode.

I have used MS VirtualPC for over 3 years with Vista, MS does not offer any free OS to use with VPC unless to a business with an appropriate support contract.

I am in process & have installed virtualBox v3xxx(?) and the result does not look good - in that I appreciate the support for USB ports, the best geaphics display I can get seem to be limited to 800x600 pixel at 16 colors, no better options offered even though with Vista and W8 the computer routinely runs at 1024x768 hi-color.
Oh-well !

It's a set of drivers for the VM. You should be able to install it from VirtualBox's menus while the VM is running.

XP Mode runs in Windows Virtual PC. If you have XP mode installed, click Start, type virtual pc, and select Windows Virtual PC. This opens Windows Explorer to your Virtual Machines folder. You'll find the file Windows XP Mode.vmcx.

Yes, but you're thinking of the newer version that came with Windows 7 - VPC 2007 is an older version that didn't.

Well heck...both you people got my attention with your most recent post- thanks!

That VPC has a new(er) version out is news here - and that it supports/includes free Xp is simply amazing. I need to do some more internet digging to see what is out there - but if you have pointers please pass-along. Anyway, the current problems is not with Win-7 so don't know if a newer VPC version might or not work with Win-8 (do know that VPC v2007 DOES work with Win-7).

With my efforts at VirtualBox, I finally downloaded the newest version 4.2.4 as I was initially using v3.0.10 and getting nowhere, could not find an appropriate "guest additions" anywhere on Sun's website. Next problem, is that VirtualBox new version "guest" page cannot find the matching additions file even though I downloaded and it is in the same directory that virtualbox was installed into, also in the root of C: and offers me no navigation facilities to help locate...just complains!

Well known fact to me that MS only gets things to work rite after about 3 attempts so maybe Sun is the same!

You get the free copy of XP ONLY of you have Windows 7 (or 8) Pro or above.

You install the additions from a VirtualBox menu when the VM is running.

You can download Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC from http://www.microsoft...ws/virtual-pc/. Be patient. It's a long download.

AFAIK, it only works on Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate. Brian says it also works on Win8. I haven't tested it that way.

Actually, I haven't tested it on 8, but I'm assuming it should still work.

Have finally had some modest success here. After 4 more attempts, guest additions installed Ok, video is good, everything I have checked seems to be working. I have installed Win-2000 Pro. in VirtalBox v4x and it is super SLOW starting up, taking near 6 minutes to boot. Once booted, so far, it seems normal speed when running, even including old IE6, but Firefox is also VERY slow to load.

I have Win-7 Home Premium but actually wanted to use VPC on Win-8 Pro. so I went to the MS link for the new Win-7 VPC download but finally talked myself out of it at the moment as it is a very big download and with my 1-Gb dsl speed not undertaken while other things are pending. Plus, VirtualBox has been such a dog getting to work, fighting me every step, that I think I will keep it a few more weeks and see how it develops - I mean to say that I have not gotten done all the cussing I feel it needs!
ha

Thanks people for all the help and advise.

I just did a little Googling on the subject. Check out http://social.techne...79-7ae23ac1e653 and http://www.pcadvisor...ode-windows-8/.

Hmm, that's interesting - I'll have to mess with HyperV then. It doesn't stop you from installing a copy of XP in VirtualBox or VMware Player though.
