it may make sense to look at why these disparate update rates exist. for example, i use firefox, chrome, and explorer (each for different things), and i've noticed the following:

firefox has an updater that does not work. when there's an update, i have to reinstall the whole thing, which is a pain.

chrome updates itself within the browser, which is very easy and painless.

explorer is one of the programs maintained by my employer (i almost never use it because it has no adblocker), who controls the updates and it is therefore updated by them (the downside is the unexpected restarts, but at least i know they usually happen around 3am).

IE updates as part of Windows update. You have not choice. I am not sure about how Chrome updates, I do not use it but it is probably automatic. I would not say the Firefox updater does not work, I use it all the time. There are reasons in Firefox for not updating. Seeing it updates in the background, if you don't keep Firefox open long enough it will not finish the update. Go to Help > About Firefox and you will see the check update button. Click on that and it will tell you if it is up to date, or show the update downloading. That said some people do not update due to an add-on. Firefox has many and sometimes they quit working with a new update. If someone wants that add-on they will not update until it is compatible. I have done that myself, with no problems.

It may also have to do with Mozilla making a new version of Firefox every other week.

Well. I'm not surprised. When the folks at Mozilla break something I find it amazing how they are not willing to fix it.

Way way back they broke the scroll feature in the Lenovo Thinkpad. So far, there are no fixes. I read where one Mozilla guru said they knew they broke it, but too bad.

So, I use a Firefox that goes way way back +1. If I'm forced to change, I'll have to go to IE as the Chrome add on is pretty bad.

Internet Explorer 9 has an ad blocker! Simply go to "Manage Add-Ons", "Tracking Protection" and Click "get tracking protection list online" download Fanboy List from Microsoft site!

There are many Tracking Protection list on Microsoft's site but Fanboy is the one I tried and it works great!

"It may also have to do with Mozilla making a new version of Firefox every other week."

I think "KLanD" said it best. I use to update FF regularly because I stopped using IE long ago because it updates too much, and for what. it's always having vulnerability problems. Microsoft has more software on my computer than I do.

Firefox has gotten on my last nerve because as KlanD said it's now coming out with new updates too often and the ones that I've tried are too buggy with Windows 7, so I've stopped at the stable version of 13.0.1. Anything beyond that just doesn't work! And the plug-ins can't keep up either.
