I purchased Windows 8 for my desktop when it first released and it's been a very pleasant experience. It's stable, fast, and easy to use, surprisingly enough. I thought it would be considerably more difficult to get used to the Start Screen, but it's not a problem.
The biggest test is using it at work; that's where I want to try it. I've seen some people use it recently for work and use it very effectively which impressed me. We'll see how it works for the general corporate user.
All things aside though, I'm happy I upgraded...it was only $40 after all.

I been using Windows 8 at home and at work. In either case seldom use the new skin for much. It kinda gets in the way. The only thing I hate is to search the way I prefer, requires opening an Explorer windows vs just clicking start and using the box.

I like that the S is a bit fast even on older hardware. I have a ThinkPad T60 from 2007 and Windows 8 runs like the laptop was made to run it. Of course it runs Windows 7 very well too. My new laptop that came with Windows 7, I will keep on 7 for the foreseeable future, but I dug out an older Toshiba laptop with an i3 and it runs Windows 8 flawless.

I think MS could have skipped the metro UI on the desktop version, or made it so it can be permanently turn-off, but it not a deal breaker.

Not a major upgrade at all since the foundation for 8 is basically Windows 7. I wished they had kept Aero if anything. For $0 I'd say its a tie me over until the Surface Pro is avail, which is what I want.

I know if you swipe from the right side there's a search function there you can use. It jumps to the Start Screen and searches your comp, but you can also decide if it should search through other apps too, which is pretty cool when I'm searching for an app. The search functionality for apps and stuff is all built into the search functionality of the OS itself, it took me a while to realize that.

I think this has as much to do with peoples satisfaction with 7 as much as a fear of 8.

But, it will take off when touch is ubiquitous, and it will be.

My next laptop will be touch, played with one the other day and actually liked it.

It's even easier than that. You can just start typing into the Start screen and it will begin searching. However, it seems that Quadicon is referring to the interface for the search.

I don't have much nice to say about Windows-8. I bought a boxed copy for $70, have had to install it twice to get a stable OS result. Almost all the supplied apps are of no interest to me and I have already hit the incompatibility barrier with existing apps so if seriously try to use I see lotsa $$ being spent >>> and that's irritating because once the user has gotten to the desktop it seems a close clone of Windows-7 >>> so why bother?

Another nail in it's coffin is that it will not run MS VirtualPC at all and runs Sun's VirtualBox slowly & with major install difficulties, so pre-vista apps are certainly history. Be cautious when you consider upgrading ....

I use a Samsung Ultra Book and Samsung brought in their own suite of software called "SW Update" which auto-hides at the top or bottom of the desktop and has its own Start Button just like in old Windows 7!.

Windows 8 is cool, it just does not have enough applications like the android or Apple store but hope it will pick up over time.

I think Microsoft is betting that the PC will eventually evolve into a Touch Screen device. Hope their bets turn true.

Wow 12% of people are thinking of buying a Macintosh. I never knew that 12% of people buying new computers are either hipsters or dj's or idiots.

Windows 8 is the dumbest thing Microsoft has ever done! Just to sell WP8 mainly, tablets and Xbox. Only to cause the opposite! Looks like Windows 7 will be the new XP!

1)Lot of them are satisfied with win7...if it aint broken dont try to fix it seems to be their mantra.

2)Some of them could be holding for win9 as first generation of products are still feared by many.

3)Some of them could be thinking of buying a mobility oriented tablet(ipad or nexus 7) as their next computing device instead of a standard PC.

I see this a positive for Windows 8 after couple of weeks of Windows 8 Launch
"9 percent said they were eager to buy a new machine right away just to get Windows 8"

if you multiply 9% by number of global PC users, that huge
so what is segmentation of Windows 8 Tablet & Tablet Convertibles? it is should considered PC

while in US (~15%-20% of Global PC?) OS preferable trends is not the same like global trend, Mac & iPad in US is attractive to more Americans than other parts of the World

sooner or later XP & Vista old machines will be upgraded

To search Apps, Settings, Files just start typing your search right at the "Metro" window. It works better than 7! You might need to click on Settings or Files since it always defaults to Apps search.

I have no idea what Microsoft was thinking here anyway - their idea is: If it isn't broken, don't improve it, BREAK IT!!!

I see very little connection between the "upgrading" statistics and the "get a new computer" statistics.
This user MAY upgrade to W8 at some time, but this DOES NOT mean I will be buying a new computer!
Corporate IT will be the same.
The "only nine percent are being enticed to buy a new computer" is largely irrelevant to W8's success.
To disagree without being disagreeable is the art of debate. Simply because one has a strong opinion, it does not necessarily make an alternative opinion less valid.

Everything I've heard so far with Windows 8 OS gives me a sinking feeling. Similar to the feeling I had when they launched Vista. I listened to that feeling and I'm listening to this feeling. Sure glad to know I'm not alone!
