I don't use the x120e too much (I use the desktop mainly at home), and I tend to not run it much off the battery (when I do, it's often for a period or two at school, and I can usually find places to plug it in if needed), so I guess that's why. (though I thought storing it at 100% isn't the best for it?) My thought is just that there are rare times where it's convenient to have as much as charge as possible, and I'm not near an outlet. (on a long flight, for instance) The friend's HP definitely runs hot - as I recall, that's a 15" one with an AMD P340. I'm sure their cat would enjoy sitting on the couch where the laptop was just running. (the cat is really old and always loves to sleep on warm things)
What exactly are you referring to by surface clips anyway?

in the lower left corner is a white ribbon, look at how it is connected.

Yep... just a wee bit fragile.

A 13% wear after 1 year + isn't bad. I wouldn't worry too much. Statistically speaking, that is on the low end. As for the HP, remember that they run intentionally hot from the factory, hence the short battery life.
As another data point, my 11" Air is at about 93% for "battery health". It has 256 cycles on it. I have had it just about 2 years (about 1 month short of the 2 year anniversary). The biggest hit to battery life was the upgrade to Mountain Lion (they fixed some of the battery drain, but it still seems to drain faster than when I was still on Lion).
On in your case, if you REALLY need "full" battery life at some point in the future, you can always buy a replacement battery. And yes, that is basically something that I cannot do with my Air (in reality, you can actually upgrade it...it is just not quite as "user friendly" as process as for non-Apple laptops: http://www.ifixit.co...010#0-Batteries ).
