thank you very much for your reply...interesting I found a hardware diagnostic shop near my place this evening))) could be a fast way to correct any hardware errors if they occur...

I am now more concerned about how excel 2010 can utilize the multi-threaded calculation....I could go with i7 3930k set-up - do you think it can utilize all of its cores? Maybe someone with i7 3930k can run a EXCEL 2010 on it

If you you are running through multiple VMs, then it won't be any trouble.

yes thanks...I have been thinking of that...)

I wonder if any one with i7 3930K or XEON E3 127V2 can comment on the multi-threading boost to EXCEL 2010 or EXCEL 2007 performance???? I need this to make the final decision between these two setups...do you think the multi-threaded EXCEL 2010 in the case of i7 3930K or XEON E3 127V2 can be significantly faster than the single threaded EXCEL 2003?
thanks a lot!)

I just wanted to let you know that I recently bought the HP Z420 machine with the e5-1650 processor and 8 gb ecc ram!) runs great!) thank you for your comments and directions!!!!))))

i had one more question - I do need to think fo a backup solution just in case - I was wondering if you can recommend anything for this - do you think there is a way to upload and run my own 64-bit vmware image containing the 64 bit office and Matlab to some private cloud service??? just to be sure I have another place to recalculate all stuff for emergency cases...would it be possible to upload such a wmware image to some cloud service? what do you think?
thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

An entire VMware disk image is likely to be 20GB or more - it's not realistic to upload that to a cloud service. You could upload the data you're actually working on to dropbox though, or use a program like syncback (which doesn't use a proprietary format) to back it up to an external drive.

I don't know if there is a place to run your VMWare image from the cloud, but there are certainly places to do the backup. They are not free, of course, but will do the job nicely. Just look for cloud backup services on Google. I don't use any myself, so cannot really recommend one. Personally, I would suggest a NAS box in your home to backup to.
