Font files are OK. Their size is kilobytes, and I've never seen font files with size running into magabytes, so they don't take that much space. After all, you need something to fill this minimum 500 GB HD space with. More, you're sure to add other fonts as it's a rule that the fonts you like and use are hardly ever pre-installed.
Windows Explorer... I know it exists but use Alt Commander when I would have to open too many windows.
Backup & Movie Maker - as you said, it's best to use third party software.
And one more thing: file associations , at least in Win7, work different as you need to add your app to the Windows default apps list first and then make assocaitions. Normally you'd launch an app, find Associations in one of its menus, tick the extensions you want to associate, okay it and quit this app. In Win 7 this doesn't work and I tried it with 7-Zip 9.20.
