What the heck has happened to the people at PC World ??

I still have the Nov 2011 issue of PC World which had an article called "Game On" and under the Sub-Title "20 Best PC games" you had World Of Tanks listed and a review of it there. ( albeit it was the last one listed ).

So why is PC World dragging up this old tired game, it was 2 years old a year ago when you did the 1st review ???

And I've played it a couple of dozen times...not that impressive...graphic are weak by todays standards...sound is just average ( on a Logitech X540 5.1 system powered by a Creative X-fi Extreme fidelity card )...and if you want to kick some ass you have to buy some credits to get a better tank otherwise the players that do will blow your ass up with a quickness.

PC World , please get some better people doing these articles and the Daily Downloads you email out.

P.S. No insult intended toward Ian Harac....but lordy get up to the here and now.

Another "Suck you in" "FREE" video game that Nickels and Dimes you to death. I would rather be charged $50.00 up front and gain experience by playing.

Just installed this yesterday and haven't spent a dime. It's very fun and surprisingly addicting. Still learning but at least not going in kamikaze style. The graphics are pretty good considering. Was nice to watch the Sidestrafe videos while the game was downloading. Beats the heck out of the swtor f2p disaster.

This game is actually pretty fun and relatively cheap to play. It's biggest fault is it's playerbase, the arrogance and player bashing is rampant both in game and on it's forums. The moderators come from the community and bring grudges and bias regarding players and clans, and it is painfully obvious that there is favoritism and prejudice from them.

Aside from that distraction, it's relatively addictive at lower tiers, but as you progress into higher tiers, the self absorbed players tend to suck the fun out of the game,

Good advice: Play it for Free - Forever. Do not ever spend a cent, especially on the SEA server because later u will feel hustled.

At first their "pro" minions using multiple accounts will let you win easily so that you will think "oh yes, I can be good at this" and spend some money on it but then comes the trolling (ie. Team Killing but worst of all losing won games on purpose just to keep your "win rate" in line when this is suppose to be a team result).

The game is actually fine were it not for the greedy and corrupt elements of the so called "community" in that region and this is bringing its class down making it a cheapskates game. There are also so called "mods" that give unfair advantage and should be considered cheats. Also if you spend on premium tanks these "pro" monkeys will call you wallet warrior noob, etc...spam the screen wen u don't follow their commands, etc... its not fun at all.

Well, you can turn of chat by going to settings, but to me that's just a waste. When used properly, especially with experienced players, chat can be a key tool to winning the game. I am currently playing Tier IV's and V's, such a the American T49 and German Pz38na, and enjoy the game quite thoroughly. I do not suggest though buying consumables (ie repair kits, first aid kits, etc.) until you reach at least Tier V, save you be an SPG (artillery tank or Self Propelled Guns) then it would be wise to invest starting Tier IV. This game does involve quite a bit of skill, and I suggest looking down a tank line before devoting your time to it only to find those tanks suck.

World of Tanks is a money sink. It is free but to compete in the higher tier's you have to spend money on upper tanks or worst gold ammo. That's right Pay to Win. Gold ammo hits harder and go through thicker armor and it cost real money. The game is very in depth and every aspect of the game can be enhanced with gold / real money. The older clans have a in with the dev's and rule the game. My advise is play the lower tiers as a fun time but don't get sucked in to spending money because you will hate how the players yell and wine in the upper battles and how your clan wants you to spend more money so that you can shoot gold rounds etc. The game support could care less if you have fun or if the tank works because they already got your money and they will tell you Ok that is working as designed you need to buy a different tank to do what your asking.

Not really dude, one of the best free to play MMO's out there. The premium tanks are generally a good bit weaker than any of their counterparts if they are well researched. Gold rounds are rarely used except in clan battles, and you can now buy them with the in game creds. Also the dev's listen to their player base quite a bit, such as giving the unbalanced artillery a nerf after seeing player's comments and looking at the data. So please don't talk about this game unless you have reached tier 10 and actually know what you are talking about. Thank you.

Fun and addictive yes but...as a free player you won't see as far as members or be able to shoot on the run which is an essential stratagy for light tanks. Be prpared to die quickly from a member who was able to see you first accross an unobstructed field. If you want a contest of skill v skill don't buy or play this. "Free to play" is just a scam to suck you in and provide zombies for paying players. If you like daddy's wallet to make you feel superior this ones for you. Otherwise spend 1/3 the money for a game you can play forever vs membership of $100/year and at least if you're not good there is a chance of getting better. And lonewolf I have played the higer tiers it just gets worse.

Many of the top players will admit to having spent upwards of one thousand dollars on this game, which of course is their business, but the latest rage is against the SPG class and rampant team killing of them. This effort is being led by the top clans and WarGaming does nothing to stop it. Myself, I have spent around four hundred, played for almost two years and might still be playing if I was 'allowed' to play my class of choice.

Platoons of three top players now completely dominate matches and the end game CW's is completely dominated by a small handful of clans which receive all available 'free' gold, leaving the overwhelming majority left spending real money trying to break their stronghold.

Good design, bad application, horribly inadequate management.

I strongly disagree, the game is entirely playable for free. You'll just have to mess around a bit with the various types of gameplay in lower tiers (up to 5-6) get a feel for whether you prefer heavies, mediums, lights or arty. And particulary what type of country as their weapons behave different.

Germans: Accurate, fast aiming, lack pen in lower tiers, usually lower damage
Americans: Reasonably accurate, aims fast, high rate of fire, sometimes low penetration in lower tiers
Russians: Inaccurate, long aim times, big alpha damage, across the board ok penetration values
etc for british, french and chinese...

Now once you've settled on that just pick a tank line and go with it, retrain your crew to 90% base skill onto the next tier and it'll be back up at 100% in a reasonable amount of games. If however you choose to branch out all over the place and not train your crews properly... yes then you'll fall behind compared to people who spend gold to instantly train base skill to 100% (from that point on crew can learn secondary skills).

However there is no ingame benefit whatsoever to be gained with premium that you can't get without it. Premium ammo can be bought nowadays for credits, yes shooting it is expensive but only fire them when needed and I reliably still make a profit without running premium.

The premium vehicles? well what can I say they are convenient, got a bunch of freebies from events and the T34 due to having it prior to its move to premium status (and WG even gave those that had it the new replacement regular tank as well, nice policy). Advantages of premium vehicles? any crew of the same vehicle class (light/medium/heavy/arty) from the same nation can drive in them without a skill penalty making them a convenient crew trainer thats the primary thing about them imo. Other advantages are a credit generation bonus, they make more money and are cheaper to repair. Performance wise they are sub par across the board, better than stock regular tank but significantly worse than upgraded ones. (A tendancy to be heavier armoured, but with weak guns for the tiering)

Conclusion: Gold is a shortcut, no its not needed and ANYTHING that gives a battle benefit can be gotten without it. If you enjoy playing the game you don't have to spend it. You'll get there slower, don't branch out everywhere try things then decide and stick with it (hint: test servers are available close to patches). The game duration is great too, you'll never be busy with a round for more than 15 minutes making it easy to squeeze in a few games during a day with appointments.
