Wow! That's just BS! This is an old story! Microsoft has made 40 million licenses available for sale. I have read many articles that state this. M$ said this after the first week too. It's funny I've seen many stories stating Win8 is not selling well. Of course this is the same spin they used for Vista. http://www.extremete...ing-says-newegg

Windows 8 is nothing like Vista. Windows 8 is faster than Windows 7 and very light on your system. I have had Windows 8 for 5 months now.

I can believe this bravado (had to search my soul to find that word), I bought a copy, dual booted and actually used this software for a week. I cannot access my email (it does not like pop3), cannot open a email in excite for reasons completely unknown to me, cannot play a dvd without downloading questionable codecs (or paying M$ for something they should have supplied), cannot switch between win7 and win 8 without shutting my machine down (otherwise it blue screens), and trying to navigate its useless app screen to get to programs is just short of madness with a desktop and no touch screen. Lots of people like myself gave it a fair chance, it is not ready for prime time players. Yes, I believe they sold 40 million copies to people like myself, glad I dual booted. If this is the future of computing, we are in deep trouble. M$ expects people to be productive on this software? The only reason I could give for using this software is it does boot faster (after I turned the hybrid boot fast startup software off it booted faster)? The apps available may humor someone, I have only found 3 that may be of any value. This software is running on a quad core with 8 gig of ram, and a very good graphics card. Glad I kept win7. The kids will love it. Ok I can't say much for your email problems I haven't had any yet though. However, what the heck are you talking about needing codecs to play a DVD? I have never had this problem with windows 8. We watched a redbox movie last night fine. Try getting widows media center It's free till Jan.

VLC Media Player is also free and better than Windows Media Center

This story makes me laugh. The majority of those 40 million licenses were sold to companies like Dell, HP, Sony, etc.. I bet less then 10% of that 40m figure is to regular people upgrading. Nice way to spin those figures tho.

There are many people cannot believe that Microsoft sold 40 millions copies of Windows 8. Just like 6 months ago or more, Microsoft announce it sold over 400 million copies of Windows 7. People or should I say Apple fans cannot admit that Microsoft sold that many Windows, because this mean the writing is on the wall. The big ride with Apple will come to a end. Keep in mind that many of the sales are world wide, not just old USA. Many other countries are supporters of Microsoft. Just like Samsung Galaxy III phone is kicking the IPhone down especially outside the US, Microsoft is doing the same with Windows.

Your can all put your head in the sand, but the true is not going to change.

But yet you believed that Apple sold 25 million iPhones in 3 days or that 8 sells 8 million android devices a week right?

There are also parts that make me question your hardware. I have 2 machines now upgraded to Windows 8 final, and neither have that problem... both running completely different hardware as well.

As most above say, how many of these 40M copies were bought by manufacturers who have no choice? PCW's acceptance and publishing of propaganda like this is completely disgusting.

And you obviously are a "boutique" user -- or an M$ turfer. Massive numbers of *serious* Windows Pro users say the opposite...

"When Steven Sinofsky was fired Tami Reller chief financial officer and chief marketing officer took on responsibility for the business of Windows. "

Can anything reveal M$'s objectives more clearly than replacing the Windows *technical* CEO with a *financial* CFO who has no technical experience? M$ is truly in *meltdown*! How long will the M$ "True Believers" keep deluding themselves....?

Lies, lies and lies. I do not believe Microsoft at all. Windows 8 is a huge failure and sneaky Microsoft is pulling all the tricks to promote this horrible and irritating new OS. I just bought a new laptop and I made sure I got Windows 7 instead of the lousy Windows 8. It is only a matter of time till stupid Microsoft pulls this garbage OS off the market, re-writes it and fixes it and releases the new Windows 9.

I hope you're right, but I don't think you are. Too many M$ MBA's are drinking their own kool-aid.

Alright!!!! Way to go Microsoft. I really enjoy Windows 8 and I hope the public tries it before they make a decision like many of the pinheads on this site. I guess the complainers forgot that you don't have to use Windows 8 if you don't want to.There are alternatives but alas someone is forcing them to. Lame.

Groveling? What are you smoking? You really need to get your head out of your arse.

Why doesn't MS say how many of those licenses were for new PC's that install Win8 as OEM? I'd bet that most were. The others were to people who bought the $40 upgrade version just to use it in dual boot mode to try it out. The real test is how many businesses upgrade to Win8!!!!

It doesn't matter, 40 million is 40 million no matter how negatively you want to spin it. I bet you as soon as businesses migrate to Win8, haters like you will have another excuse like "the real test will be how many Martians will upgrade to Win8!!!!!"

And Dell, HP, Sony, etc. sell those licenses to real people. You are negatively spinning these numbers. 40 million is 40 million.

Yesterday I commented that Steven Sinofsky was fired Tami Reller chief financial officer and chief marketing officer took on responsibility for the business of Windows.

Tami Reller report directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. It was Tami Reller that reported the 40 million licenses sold.

Anyone really have an idea what's going on in Microsoft HQ.

As CFO and CMO Tami Reller will oversee the business operations. She will be working with Julie Larson-Green, Larson-Green helped design Office in 1997. She is now Microsoft's New Windows Boss.

Now picture this. Both these women are very intelligent, and they both report to Steve Ballmer. Time will tell if they can stomach working for Ballmer!

Steven Anthony Ballmer, has received the singular honour of being named by Forbes as without a doubt “the worst CEO of a large publicly traded American company today”. For 12 years this man has ruled or should I say ruined Microsoft, isn't it time they let them go?

Under Ballmer's stewardship, products have consistently been delayed, and when they have arrived they've been “so lacking in any enhanced value that they left customers scrambling to find ways to avoid upgrades”.

So with all sincerity I wish Reller & Larson-Green all the luck in the world they're certainly going to need it
