I'm a casual computer user, have some hardware knowledge, that's all. Installed Win8 on Oct. 26th for $40. Agree that many parts of the os are unintuitive, but the learning curve is moderate and it seems more responsive than Win7. I'm very satisfied with the product and the price.

The articles on this news make it sound like this is something new, or is exclusive to Microsoft. Apple and Google do this too, and Microsoft certainly did it with Windows 7. So don't try to paint this like the comparison to Windows 7 numbers aren't valid.

I was wondering how long it was going to take for Pcworld to find an angle to attack the sales report from MS. Can Pcworld do us a favor by reveiling a past article in which it (Pcworld) questioned a sales figure by Apple for example? Then and only then we might be convinced that Pcworld has not turned itself into a mouth-piece for the likes of Apple.

On another note, has Pcworld been taken over by juveniles? The level of pettiness that shows up in articles about anything that is not an Apple tech product is beyond sad.

Who is buying? I will be getting the Lenovo thinkpad tablet 2 when it comes out. I am looking for a tablet that is a little more than a glorified toy. I also will be installing a copy of windows 8 pro on my personal PC as early as this week. I know a few others who have already taken the plunge too. Lucky for us, we can think for ourselves and do not depends on those seemingly on the take to mislead us. All of this by the way while still enjoying my iPhone 4 and the MBP we have in the house. My wife loves her iPhone 4 and her iPad 2 as well.

What a pointless, petty article... Nothing positive or hopeful shown in its writing. Its really is an attack piece full of fluff.

Staying away from this place.. it tastes bitter.

The comparison is between Windows 8, an OS that is sold primarily to OEMs and Windows 7, an OS that was sold primarily to OEMs. It's perfectly valid.

If you don't know what OEM means, since Apple doesn't allow such things, ask Siri, but if she doesn't know, Google or Microsoft will be glad to provide you with the definition.

Perhaps Ziff Davis should resurrect the MacWorld title and retire PCWorld. "Articles" such as this one have made it irrelevant.

I am going to have to join w8la (Windows 8 Lovers Anonymous) because obviously I've been duped. I love windows 8 and use a mouse and keyboard, AND I THINK ITS NOT A BURDEN.

I MEAN WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!!!!!!!!

It must me that abstract thinking ability my mother told me I had when I was not doing well in high school. Could not do any math but if you told me to go to the corner I sure knew where that was.

I have personally purchased and am using 3 licences. 1 on my desktop, one on my laptop, and one on my old desktop that I gave to my parents. I have been looking to buy a tablet but have been disappointed with the offerings so far. If OEM's can get their crap together and come up with some compelling designs, I will buy a Windows 8 tablet, and maybe another one for my niece.

Didn't usage data for Windows 8 show like 1.5% of the market or something? That's alot of PC's. I don't think the 40 million number is too far off at all.

Not just apple....but also the bigger elephant in the room....android sales.
Are returned devices still counted as sales cuz androids are returned far more than iphones.

Ive been using Windows for its lifespan, and have used every version from 3.1 to ME to 8 and I have to say, the people saying that its unintuitive just havent been around tech long enough. To me its like my lovely ZuneHD on a macro scale its engenius I mark this as the first real Post Bill Gates windows, and it blew all his archaic start button required OS's out of the water. I dont even really want to run Ubuntu anymore and for the past 6 years its been my favorite OS. So, you cant tell me they didnt do something right :D

I bought the Windows 8 OS when it was released. I have been using it on my main laptop since the release and have not looked back. Since I have VMWare and an installed version of windows xp on my VM Machine, I do not have the compatibility issues, or rather any issues I do have, I just use my virtual machine.
Anyway, I find the windows 8 os extremely fast and pretty dead on. Multitasking is ridiculously fast (I have an i7 Envy with dual video cards 16 gb Ram and a SATA 3 SSD). The learning curve was a little steep even for me, but a couple of searches on the internet cleared those navigational issues right up.
So, there you have it PC World (I put some emphasis on "PC" World), quite a few users have purchased the Os. And I am waiting for the release of the Pro version to purchase a tablet. I am a developer and I need my full version in order to do what I do.

I see no need to run to Windows 8. I already have too much "old stuff" that I had to either use Linux (WINE), DOSBox or some other means of getting it to run on Windows 7 when I had to buy a new desktop. I haven't gotten around to installing DOS, 95 and XP on VirtualBox (although I do have XP on my one laptop which runs everything). I have found Windows 7 to be a PITA. There is just enough change from XP to have me waste time googling for an answer - not very productive. I also notice that about 80% - 90% of the "patch Tuesday" updates are security fixes - so much for better security than XP. Also have had a number of crashes Blue AND Black screens of death. In less than a year, I have had to restore Windows 7 at least a half dozen (if not more) times. I can imagine WIndows 8 not being any better.

As I see it all the comments are made by the techies. When it comes to the average Joe Schmoes, they will not be pleased. For one thing, they tend to be reluctant to spend time learning new tricks or in this case a new UI For another thing, most of them only need a good browser and the means for playing games when they aren't e-mailing or surfing the internet or watching youtube. If they happen to be fortunate to have someone introduce them to a good Linux distro (e.g., Mint and MATE, ZorinOS or SolusOS - not Ubuntu anymore - it was "Metro" before Microsoft) and install it, they will never go back to Windows.

What a new low for PCWorld. No investigating work here. Just hired a troll to write an article. What is this of asking Gizmodo about Windows 8 Sale? Isn't Gizmodo a pro Apple blog site? Weren't they who got in trouble for showing Apples IPhone 4 before anyone after they bought from a guy that found one at a bar? Is like asking a bear what does he thing about salad. No clue.

Let's see, Microsoft announced a few months ago they sold over 400 million Windows 7, and Windows XP, 2000, Vista and 7 have over some billions software sold. So 40 million looks like a real number (keep in mind that Microsoft sells word wide not just the US).

Hey, guys, here's something to take a look at: http://semiaccurate....re-finally-out/
