ok, then less likely ppl will buy a $900 tablet. MS, if you're behind, you need to catch up and $900 tag will not getting you closer to Apple.

And with the touch cover going for $100, you're talking $1000 to $1100. I actually would not buy another tablet unless it ran Windows, and specifically, Windows 8. I have an Android tablet and I've used an iPad, and while they're fine, they just lack the capabilities of a full operating system.

So I actually want Windows 8 tablets to succeed, but at those prices, I just can't see that happening. With manufacturing costs reported to be about $23, the touch covers should be included, not sold separately at a greater than 400% profit margin. And both the Pro and RT tablets need to come down at least $100. I would be very interested in a 128 gig Surface Pro with a touch cover for $800, but absolutely not at $1100.

It's called Pro for a reason. You guys are in the little leagues with your complaints and your pocketbooks.

You can't compare the above tablet to an apple iPad. The Surface with Win8 Pro is running a full fledged Win8 operating system! Not a scaled down OS like iOS. Now if Apple had a tablet that was running OSX, THEN maybe you could compare the two but until then APPLE has some catching up to do.

Your kidding right? I can get an awesome MabBook Air, for that price and it runs OS X, Windows and Linux... And is very cool.

and the ipad 2 with 64 gig ram at $699 is any cheaper, yes but only by a small amount and I can't run full desktop software on it. Nor "intel" based software period. So it's priced to compete. Not to mention Microsoft doesn't want to compete with the entire market with the surface they are leaving room for hardware vendors to step-up and make their own better than and cheaper than surface tablets that they can use to under cut the surface and Microsoft wants them to do this. The vendors just taking way to long to realize they should be doing it right now. Which is why Microsoft is putting out the surface to begin with, lack of vendor enthusiastic update of windows 8. bottom line windows 8 is here to stay, and MS will do whatever it takes to make it happen, but they also want t provide room to keep hardware partners in the game.

Overall I am happy with the price, cause the surface dances circles around any tablet from a productivity stand point and for only a small amount more than ipad. It's a solid deal / price.

$900!!! Ha ha ha! A lot of cash for a proprietary pain in the hind end. And a disposable OS that will cost 300 to replace. How much to upgrade an Ipad OS? $40? Surely it is nice, but I cannot see the market for this soon to be obsolete tablet. A nice andriod or mac tablet is half as much and so is a decent laptop. Fools rush in!

$900 for a MS Surface...OR $900 for two iPads OR three Nexus 10 tablets OR one Nexus 4 Phone and two Nexus 10 tablets OR four Nexus 4 mobiles or 6 Nexus 7 tablets. Think you get the idea!

MaBook Air has lower display resolution and is NOT a tablet. Still no comparison.

That's the whole point. You should be comparing the surface pro to a mac book air or any other ultra book to determine the value at $899. Surface Pro does everything the mac book pro does at a lower price and has a tablet form factor as well. I am anyway afraid that my point will be wasted on those seeing the comment on an iPad or a Mac. :)

No it is not, look at Samsung ATiv smart pc pro and it is $1200, you can not compare Apple computer to windows, windows productivity and apple is more about entertainment. Most businesses out there have office and windows stuff, they use windows server and therefore you need pc.

So this is in-fact a full bore touch-centric laptop/ultrabook/whatever... and considering that I'm not put off by the price. It's closer to a MacBook Air than an iPad both in capabilities and in price.

My concern is the same as I have for any ultrabook - The on-device storage will get consumed very quickly by any apps that I install, so I'm thinking that cloud-based storage with some really intelligent caching (for when you're not online) will be called for.

Sorry, but what is a "full operation system" for you? Android and iOs with their app ecosystem are halffull operating systems?

Actually mbejane, you haven't been paying attention. The latest Windows OS upgrade was only $40 too. Not $300. Your argument just got tossed out.

About the price points I was expecting, and within reason for my next laptop purchase.

For those that are wondering, the surface (both really) are more then just tablets.

Current tablets are really good for consumption but quite frankly suck for creation, and this is the hybrid style device that will help users get rid of old laptops and desktops in the home, something both apple and google have failed to do.
