Hardware Router

My internet provider is AT&T U-verse. My question is should I use a separate hardware (firewall) router with the 2 wire gateway provided by AT&T or does their router serve that function?

If it has a router function built into the modem/gateway, then there should be no need for a separate router. In such a case, the only reason to use a separate router would be if there was some function/feature that you wanted that was available in a third party router but not in the built-in router.
