Tbird - do you have any friends that may just possibly have a PCI x16 video card? If you could try that and see if it helped. If its an nVidia - I would not go below 6200 because your card is a 6800. After reading all the posts about the nVidia 6800 card I am beginning to think that it may be nVidia's version of the Ford Pinto.MPH - congrats on the upgrade to Member Moderator. Well deserved.

[quote name='Tbird24']well MPH, you live in new jersey. i figured long island is a little bit out of your range. and i do not know of a computer shop nearby. i guess im willing to spend the 250$. cause i also want them to show me how to run all my antivirus properly, and back up my files, etc. all that good stuff. This is an excellent idea, while a local shop would be nice, this is still an excellent idea, .....unless you want to ship it to me, and I'll fix it,....$$$$$$. .....LOL j/k

MPH - don't forget Indiana has one thing that New Jersey doesn't and be grateful - Tornados. Course Indiana does't have too many Hurricanes either. I just gratefull that I live in a little slice of Georgia that doesn't have too many of either - dead center on the southern border with Florida. Hurricanes goe West of us and curve over the North to get to the Atlantic or the go to the East up the Atlantic Coast.Course come August, when its a 100 and the humidity is 98%, it can be a little uncomfortable (TGFAC Thank God for Air Conditioning).

Very true....we don't get Tornadoes or Hurricanes too often. However, we do get Nor'Easters. But listen, let's not grow this thread too much. I absolutely cannot stand this anymore. I got my computer about a year ago.It is a Dell XPS. Very top of the line. Ever since i can remember, my CPU usage would go through occasional spikes. IT would jump into the 50% range, and stay there. This would cause my computer to lag to the point where i couldnt even move my mouse. I would then shut off my computer, wait 10 minutes, and start up again. This happened i would say at least once a day. Well, starting about a month ago, i began to get popups, well long story short, i was badly infected. My computer crashed, and i brought it in for repair. The computer guy (very smart) tried everything, and finally just reinstalled XP. He was able to transfer over everything in My Documents. So, i got a new computer basically. well, i thought i did. turns out, i still have this damn CPU problem. He said that the CPU spike in the past was because i had malware running on my computer, etc. Well, im fairly certain i have no malware running now, because my computer was just cleaned, as stated above. i have quite a few virus softwares running automatically. He didnt teach me how to like use the interface, but they are apparently set to automatic. here is what i got now:Lavasoft Ad Aware CE PlusSymantec Client SecurityWindows DefenderNOW, i know what you guys are thinking. Just look at your processes tab and tell us which one is causing the spike. Well, NONE! EVERY single process is down at 0%, 1%, or 2%. nothing ever above that. The system idle process is up at around 97%. (all %'s are fluctuating, obviously.)Oh, and since i got my basically new computer back, the only things ive downloaded are AIM 6.0, Firefox 2.0, and AOL VR. but i recently uninstalled AOL completely, (i think completely.)Please help me out, and ask any questions that might be necessary to solve this problem. you can also look at this example picture of a CPU Spike: apparently i can't post a link yet. but ill get 4 posts soon and post it.

TBird24,

Are you certain that the person who cleaned and reinstalled XP actually wiped your hard drive entirely? If I remember correctly from my XP days, the re-install method which doesn't wipe your hard drive contents or file system may leave malware or spyware intact.

Hi Kylenstone. Wow, this got dragged up from over two years ago. Anyway, I have done many reinstalls of various Operating Systems, specifically Windows XP. At no time have I ever seen an instance where the re-install process did not get rid of a viral issue. This is not to say that it is not possible. I just have never seen it.

That being said, as you know, there are two options when doing a reinstall: Quick Format and a Full Format. There are many schools of thought on this debate; however, here is the answer straight from the source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302686

When you choose to run a regular format on a volume, files are removed from the volume that you are formatting and the hard disk is scanned for bad sectors. The scan for bad sectors is responsible for the majority of the time that it takes to format a volume.

If you choose the Quick format option, format removes files from the partition, but does not scan the disk for bad sectors. Only use this option if your hard disk has been previously formatted and you are sure that your hard disk is not damaged.

My understanding is that if your situation is probably, doing a Quick Format would be to blame. However, both formatting methods remove files from the partition. That is why I say that I have never seen an instance where a viral issue remained after a reinstall.
