Instead of trying to replace Google-Reader, for casual RSS news, you should check out this RSS-toolbar for Chrome. www.cherryfeed.com

I just discovered Slick RSS today in an ongoing search for a Google Reader alternative. Thanks for the review, i came to the same conclusion that it's a spartan reader that can do the job without any frills. Still, it's self-contained within Chrome, and it works. Will keep evaluating it.

@julian007 Cherryfeed is a news ticker, not a reader.
