I thought this was a great piece, right until the end. You've hit all of the bases, from conception of ideas, to first market, to market leader, except at the end. You glossed over the whole touch mouse. So thorough with the rest, why so loose at the end?

That's on me -- the editor -- not Gord, the writer. I added the touch mouse at the end, and apparently, my writing is not up to Gord's lofty standards!

I, personally, don't think the touch mouse has taken off. In the Mac world, the touch mouse doesn't match the magic trackpad. And in the PC world.. well, there is no widespread standard for touch mice, or OS support (even though I think MS is trying to change this with Win8). IMO, the reason the wheel mouse got so big (aside from its awesomeness) was because MS supported it in windows. I think touch mice can be great too, but the support just isn't there yet.

I still don't consider the magic mouse very innovative due to the fact that multitouch mice aren't very helpful. A touchpads have long had better multitouch capabilities and most situations don't require multitouch. Also a typical mouse has much faster scrolling and better ergonomics than the magic mouse, most mice are better than the magic mouse for most situations.

Ahh, that would explain it.

I'd just like to note that I also agree with the two comments above, I've used a couple touch mice (mouses?) Apple's is the best I've used, but it's still garbage. I like to rest my hand on my mouse, not have to constantly dangle it delicately over my mouse.

Of course you missed the fact that there were other computers with mouse technology before Microsoft brought it to the PC.

Apple had its one button mouse but computers like the Amiga, Atari and Acorn all had two button mice (mouses?) before Microsoft.

I remember magazines like yours raving about the new 'mouse technology' when Microsoft finally joined the club and many PC owners really believed that Bill Gates invented it and the others copied them.

When a mouse resembles more the hand unit of the a Borg, perhaps we need to get back to the functional basics. I use my laptop for a focal purpose, and it is never... the mouse. The mouse is a needed integral part of the computer. no more.

Many are missing. I hope someone has a collection of photos of all of them.
