I found a better (and free!) alternative- it's called windows 8 start button (windows8startbutton.com). It's light, easy to download and comes with some handy features like a media player and browser.

Just goes to show how important a lot of people think the start menu is. IO would bet a lot of people install one of these add ons as soon as they get their copy of W8. I think that Microsoft had their "Eyes Wide Shut" on this feature. I would definitely put something like that on any W8 computer that I am forced to buy (Means old one failed and could not be fixed) a new computer. W8 is "Persona Non Grata" in this house.

It would make more sense if PC World and other 'mags' would help victims of Win 8 (ie people who bought new PC's not knowing how bad 8 is) the most cost effective way to upgrade to Win 7 so they could have functional PC's. I have a friend who Dell just sold an otherwise very nice PC to except that it has Windoze 8 - oh, and the sales person forgot to mention that 8 is not only pretty awful but that it is nearly unusable without a touch screen. Now he's told it will take several weeks to replace an unused 24 inch monitor with a touch screen version - as the warranty ticks away.
