Plex can also be seen from any internet enabled DVD or Blu-Ray player. I've had Plex set up for at least 10 months now and and has been working great. I can view all my movies, music, and pictures from my Roku player. Plus the Plex it now feature is a plus. You can queue up a movie or Youtube clip from your browser and can view it later on your TV set.

Your title "Meet Plex, the media streamer that will make you forget Netflix and Hulu" implies that Plex has a similar purpose. But Hulu and Netflix are for people who don't need (or even want) to own everything they watch, while Plex simply makes it easier for those who do.

To me, this is a decent article hampered by a lousy title. Why did you do this?

Yes. Plex has a DLNA server component to it so it shows up in your PS3 Video section.

To my knowledge the Plex browser based client is now available for everyone and no longer limited to PlexPass members.

Netflix and Hulu show new TV shows that have not yet come out on DVD.

Plex does not, unless you pirate said TV shows.

Plex has a completly different purpsoe to Netflix/Hulu.
.
I used Netflix, it's awesome. "don’t get the comfort of knowing that the file is sitting on your hard drive", what does that even mean? Who cares, i'm still watching it aren't I?

With a little imagination, you can easily add TV shows to a Plex server that are newer than those offered by Netflix or Hulu without piracy. Add a device like the SiliconDust HDHomeRun for recording purposes, and you're set. You can record over the air TV (Plex itself doesn't record, but you can use MythTV or Windows Media Center to do that), or connect it to a cable provider, allowing you to record television and play it back on the Plex server without any of the delay you get with a service like Hulu or Netflix.

This is great! How much does it cost? What movies and TV shows do they have available? I have Netflix now, no problems streaming content. We don't have cable so I really enjoy being able to watch TV series that are usually on cable. So now that Plex is available maybe I can watch the Walking Dead, or Eureka, or any of the other TV shows and movies that I would normally watch on Netflix. This is really going to be great! A replacement for the $7.99 I pay each month to Netflix to watch the unlimited movies and TV shows I don't have access to otherwise. I am still trying to figure out how I can watch anything without having the media. But otherwise this really sounds great! (major sarcasm-as usual PC World has a title that has absolutely nothing to do with the article!)

Yeah, you're still watching it, until the internet goes down for whatever reason or while netflix isn't having one of their unannounced server maintenance days , such as Christmas eve. What a great day to have your service not available.

Not to mention that just because I have a movie on my hard drive doesn't mean that I've pirated it. Sometimes I don't want to wait 1 to 2 extra months for netflix to add a new title to its library that has been previously been released ,legally, elsewhere.

Plex is one of our favorite channels on Roku. In our recent top five favorite channel poll it was ranked favorably as well by our readers. Enjoyed your article except it has not really made us forget Netflix, we just enjoy Plex in addition to.

Also the Plex addon for XBMC media player works on Raspbmc so u can use the Raspberry Pi as a very good Media streamer, streaming Plex, iPlayer, ITVPlayer, TV Catchup and about as many channels as there are XBMC addons that will work in your country and if you have a suitable usb wireless adapter it can do this wirelessly. Remote control via smartphone.

Generally loving Plex think it is awesome but prefer to use it within the XBMC UI just seems slicker somehow.

Problem I've always had is this. If copying DVD to hard drive is illegal and software to rip DVD is illegal, just how do you use this legally? I was under the impression a like media backup was legal but still the software to circumvent was still illegal.
