My notebook is Asus X54HR . I am currently using Intel pentium B940 (2.00GHZ DUAL CORE) (pga988)
This laptop has been sold with either:
Intel Pentium B940 (socket pga988)
Intel Pentium B950(socket pga988)
Intel Core i3 2310M (socket ppga988?)
Intel Core i3 2330M(socket ppga988?)
Intel Core i3 2350M(socket ppga988?)

My first question: i want to upgrade to core i3 which uses socket PPGA988. My current processor uses socket PGA988. Whats the diffrence between PPGA988 and PGA998. Will PPGA988 fit into my socket?
My second question is:
Can i upgrade my notebook to CORE I5 with the same socket as the processor i am using right now (SOCKET G2 (PGA988)). This processor wasn't sold(wasn't included) in the X54H series. Will my bios support it?

OK, to answer the questions the best I can - there is no real difference in the socket on SB and IVY Bridge machines (such as yours). The socket designations appear to be used interchangeably. I came across this when considering the upgrade on my laptop.

Now the bad news: No, most likely you cannot upgrade to an i5. Yes, there is a good reason for this. The BIOS on your motherboard will have a whitelist of CPU's that can be used. The other issue will be thermal limits, many i5's and i7's consume about 10 watts more power than the i3, that is enough to require more cooling than is available on that laptop. Truth be told, I would worry about upgrading the CPU in there as it is, since many companies actually have different cooling kits based on the CPU they sold the machine with.

do you recommend switching from pentium b940 to one of the i3 s that I have stated above. The cooling was the same for the i3 and pentium versions of this notebook. Benchmarks published online show big diffrences, for example:

It comes down to weather or not you really need it. To be frank, I wouldn't touch a sub 2.5Ghz CPU any more. Even an i7. It is also worth noting, that 100 or 200 mhz can be very hard to spot in day to day computing. Now, the combination of the 300mhz clock increase, and hyper threading, certainly make that much more tempting. If you can get the CPU relatively cheap, it can easily be worth the money. I just wouldn't go spending $200+ on that chip.

The chipset supports the following CPUs. If the CPU isn't one here it won't work. But if ASUS did not include the CPU's microcode on a BIOS update, it won't run either. They are all 988 (or incompatible 1023)...there is no such 998.

As Waldojim said the thermals for an i5 or i7 would likely necessitate a redesign of the laptop. And I doubt the microcode is present though you can google to see if anyone claims to have run an i5 in the laptop. I suspect a 2370M would work. It is possible they used a different cooling solution for the Pen versus i3, but not likely.

That is where the confusion originates from.
(namely because resellers tend to use the package type 998B and the socket 988 interchangeably, when they are not)

Laptop manufacturers are also known for using different cooling for cheaper machines to help keep the costs down. Less copper used in the heatsink saves them money.
