Hello everyone! :) I have this problem with connecting to the wifi via the laptop.
So i am at my village. The network name shows up in the wireless networks list at both devices. When i connect via ipod touch, it asks me for username and password automatically, i enter them (i know them) and i connect to the internet, obviosly. At the laptop i join the network and it says it is "connected with limited access" but it doesnt ask me for a username and password therefore i dont really join and i have no internet access. So i guess i am looking for a way to enter the password and username at the laptop, so i connect to the internet? :) Hope someone knows how this can get fixed, or has had the same problem and tells me their experience - i am clueless about what to do, so any help is appreciated..:D
The system is Vista, if its of any importance. Wireless internet isnt mine so i cant change any settings, turn it on off etc.
Thanks in advance :))

Hi, Libelle, and welcome to the forum.

I don't have a PC with Vista and WiFi, so I can't be really confident that the following instructions will work on Vista. They'll definitely work on Win7, and I think Vista's pretty close with this.

  • Click the tiny WiFi icon in the notification area (bottom right corner of the screen).
  • Click the network you want to connect to.
  • Click the Connect button.
  • A dialog box will ask you for the password.

How does the iPod Touch ask fro a username & password? Is it kind of a full screen thing that kind of looks like a webpage or a pop-up little "screen"?

If it is the former, then it looks like the system uses a temporary webpage to ask for the login information. If so, then try opening up a web browser once you are connected to the WiFi network and see if it gives you a login page. Many hotels use this method.

Hi,

Do you have a wifi router at home? Did you change your wifi password on it? This "limited access" message shows when the password is not corret. In Windows 7 you rightclick the network's name, choose "Properties" and  type in the correct password. Make sure it is EXACTLY the same on the router and  your device as sometimes it 's case sensitive.

Hi Libelle,
You haven't mentioned anything about your laptop but if it's an older one with only WEP capable wifi you won't be able to connect with current routers. I know this from personal experience with an old Toshiba laptop of mine. If that isn't the issue I would try turning the wifi off on the laptop, then rebooting and turning it back on. The reboot may not be necessary but turning the wifi off/on forces it to refresh.

If this is the case then maybe new router solves the problem? Like D-Link routers support  WEP  by default and WPA  (a checkbox in the config).

But in this case no connection could have been made and the message would have been different.. "No internet access" or something like that. And browsers display an error instead of a site in such cases.
