After a point.....more megapixels means more noise (whatever that means) says one of my friends.

What your friend probably means (don't quote me on this though) is that for some cameras if you add more pixels to the sensor you just end up capturing rubbish (noise). The rubbish bits are usually only noticeable at the pixel scale, so if you zoom out completely it doesn't notice. I guess you would only really notice if you print the image full size or want to look at a particular part of the image in detail.

Actually, the problem really comes down to the obvious question, how much light can you capture on a sensor less than 25 mm2? The answer, realistically, is not much. You lose far too much detail, and end up with far more image noise. Why Toshiba decided to do this on such a tiny sensor is beyond reason. Professional sensors use much larger CCD/CMOS surface area for a good reason, to capture more available light.
The best bet, is to check out professional websites relating to this field, and read what they have to say. They can get into much more depth than I can, and they can even help make sense of it all. Suffice it to say "bigger isn't always better", in this case meaning that more pixels isn't necessarily better.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" -- Isaac Asimov

The content of the article was interesting. Too bad that there is little or no editorial oversight to add a bit of professionalism. The article is riddled with grammatical errors.
