when I'm browsing folders on my xp machine, when i open the partition 'D' on my traditional hard disk, it crashes and shows 'send/dont send' error window...why?

Back up your HDD now!

I strongly suspect you may be seeing the beginning of a general HDD failure. Run the HDD scan utilities that pertain to your model HDD. If ANY sort of errors appear, replace the HDD. If your HDD is indeed 8 years old as your signature suggests, then I would just change it anyway.

Well my sig's partially a joke though but this one is really a 8 years old model from WD, I never thought it was gonna fail at some point...but why would only one partition show error? Can't this be related to defragmentation? Cause I've never done that...

Yes, but if Windows Explorer crashes every time you visit a particular partition, the problem is clearly with that partition.

Now, a bad partition doesn't necessarily mean a bad drive, but the age of your HDD suggests that possibility. (These drives are mechanical, and they wear out.)

So I think that Elfbane's suggestions are good ones: Backup, then run a diagnostic.

Even though it's a Seagate tool, the brand of the hard drive really doesn't matter. (If you get a temperature warning, since you're not using a Seagate hard drive, ignore it. It's just reading the sensors wrong.)

Okay... If I'm gonna make a back up, whats the best and the fastest way to make a back up that can easily be transfered to another pc? If I use 4gb dvds to back up 80gbs, it will be quite a long process I guess...

Transferring your stuff to another machine over the network is the easiest option if you want your stuff on another PC. (just share a folder on machine B, then go over to machine A and copy all your stuff into that folder) You can also use an external hard drive if you have one. (this is a good idea for backups in general BTW - I do this on a weekly basis)
