To those who think Kinect was a breakthrough Microsoft innovation. Just have a look at the Sony EyeToy. . It was released way back in 2003. In fact it is cheaper and does the same things that Kinect can do.

Second, Microsoft maybe well into research but every time it releases something the market seems to have gone much further. Let me cite two examples for you... 1) Microsoft releases XBOX 360 much ahead of Sony playstation 3, but the thunder is stolen by Nintendo Wii. 2) Microsoft releases something called as 'Microsoft Surface' (The table) with great fanfare and then its gets shocked by Apple's IPhone which has more practical utility than the bulky table...

Problem with Microsoft is that its researchers think big, but its CEO is a dumbass who has no eye for innovative products. With such a duffer at the head of the org whatever innovation it may be, everything will be overtaken at one point of time or the other by competitors... History is rife with such examples... Xerox GUI being one such example.

While similar in operation, they are nowhere close to being the same technology.

"Microsoft is a stodgy, old-guard technology company. Its bottom line is fully leveraged against PC operating systems and business software"

That is grossly and demonstrably untrue.

"As far as 99.9 percent of the world population is concerned"

It's also untrue that the majority of people have this misconception, and the author should speak for himself. This viewpoint is about a decade out of date. The cool kids today are using Xbox, Kinect, etc -- on top of Microsoft retaining near enough 100% market share in the PC market.

What the hell? "Microsoft is a stodgy, old-guard technology company?". What the hell??? (10 times).
Either the author is ignorant, or he is biased. What Microsoft has done to humanity, is irreplaceable. I have seen lot of "Apple fanatics" and similar guys who just can't stop singing praise of Apple and can't just stop finding faults of Microsoft. But the reality is that Microsoft software are unbeatable. Yes, they focus on productivity, and business. Apple or other companies have just created the most expensive gadgets in the world that most of the population can't afford, or can't use. Microsoft made their technology available to masses, and served the humanity. That's true.

Unfortunately a good idea is only a part of the equation. So many times big corporations make stupid decisions - IBM president said, "why would people want a computer on their desk???" Until I seem them producing a product that is truly unique, special and fills a niche BEFORE someone else has thought of it then I'll be impressed.

I think the "me too" catch up philosophy of business is going to crush a lot of giant companies and give a lot of small companies some amazing opportunities.

Chill, the truth is, you don't need Microsoft to be productive anymore. It's good to have choices, it's awesome.

Windows, MacOS, Linux, another one here please!
