I include a multi-boot USB in my laptop bag. I keep Linux Saluki, to run if I cannot trust the hotspot. I also have Boot Repair, Parted Magic, and a Linux OS like AVG Rescue or F Secure on it. Keeps you out of trouble, or solves problems if you do get them.

A great follow up to this article is a good review on a selection of travel computer bags to fit all of this stuff in. Thats my biggest challenge, fitting it in the bag and walking normally through a crowded airport.

A few other items that help my computer bag weigh more than my suitcase:

- An envelope with cash, usually about $100, for emergencies.
- A photocopy of my passport.
- Mentos, for when my ears need to pop on an airplane.
- HDMI cable, for plugging a laptop into a hotel TV.
- FedEx/UPS envelope with blank shipping label.
- Batteries, including a couple for my hearing aid.
- A binder clips, assorted sizes, for all sorts of uses.

Good suggestions. I think I have everything apart from a lowly Ethernet cable, not long ago essential but haven't used on in some time. But now I have added it just in case. I am terrible for packing so many things though. A lightweight PC is great, but then I add half my house and office and could probably do with a trolley to carry it lol

Your list is almost complete but needs some more non-technical stuff for t for the "binders full of women": nail polish, extra cosmetics. Add to the list: a small umbrella, a blow up neck pillow, contact lens solution, small change for tips, a printout of your itinerary along with instructions for the uninformed cab driver.

Be sure to leave out the super handy all purpose tool that I had to give up at security because it was too early to find an opened place to mail it back home.

As to the bag: at a weak moment I bought a ridiculously expensive Longchamps bag. It has only 2 main compartments--the more compartments and dividers, the heavier the bag. It logged so many miles that the wheels disintegrated but the body survived intact and the company gladly replaced the wheels.

My laptop has to pass the 2 finger test: if I can't pick it up with 2 fingers, it's not really sufficiently portable. I stuff everything into the bag, seem to add more stuff every day and the zippers have survived the abuse.

three more...
children's scissors. TSA allows these and they might be the only way to open that tamper-proof blister pack you just purchased.
and,
a multi-purpose tool without sharps. Swiss+Tech sells several versions. They aren't the best tools, but they get past TSA and I've done wonders in an emergency.
and,
a tiny travel packet of duct tape. Emergency uses are too many to list.

Plastic zip bags. Organize those wires and small bits that never are where you expect them to be. Also useful for the small bits and pieces that I buy or collect.

I'm disappointed that you didn't include a hand-crank generator in your list.

I am shocked they didn't add a wireless mouse. At least for me the trackpad on a laptop is kind of annoying.
