My friend wants to build a computer that he will use mainly for rendering videos as he makes youtube videos. My question is what parts would he need to spend more on?

Hi. The first thing thst comes to mind is he will need a bit more RAM then normal. 16 Gb should be enough. Having said that, a good processor and video card are musts.

If he was rendering high quality 1080P content, then 16GB would be a necessity. If only 720p or lower definition, than 8GB is plenty. Get a decent 4 or 6 core Intel processor, and a basic nvidia GPU. An Nvidia 550Ti will help accelerate the rendering quite a bit.

Even though my desktop only has 8GB RAM, I've found that's still plenty - I seem to use 5-6GB max when doing that.

Yeah I was already gonna suggest getting 16 GB of Ram. Is this a good video card?

and is this a good processor?

Also does that processor have overclocking capabilities? Because he wants to get water cooling eventually too.

That's a fairly good GPU, though not the best if you're gaming. (enough for 1080p in all the games I've tried though) However, that CPU is NOT overclockable - you want one ending in a K - for instance, the 3570K. (http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819116504)

He won't be playing like huge games because he is still a console gamer at heart (Xbox) and he just wants to play games like minecraft and chivalry and smaller games like that.

I have always been a fan of EVGA boards. If you are willing to spend the money, go with the EVGA Z77 FTW. Other wise, I would suggest looking into the Asus or Gigabyte offerings.
