OK, so I had a hard drive going out in my machine, so I backed it up, dumped everything over to a new drive, and booted without any problem. I had a little extra cash and decided to upgrade it with a new mobo, processor, and memory. Keep in mind, this new HD booted with data from the old hard drive without a problem with the old mobo... now, when I try to boot, it launches into Windows startup repair, and can't self-repair the problem. I know enough to know about conflicts between hardware and BIOS, and that it can be changed... I'm thinking that may be what the problem is, but I'm not sure exactly wyat to look in the BIOS settings. I have tried to boot to a recovery disk via USB and "re"-recover the backup from my external hard drive with no luck... Thoughts from anyone?

MOBO: Gigabyte H61M-DS2
Processor: Intel i5-2500, 3.3GHz
Memory: 2x8Gb Komputerbay SODIMM DDR3

When I look into the startup repair details, it shows "A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting" and "System files integrity check and repair result failed. Error code = 0x490"

Edit to add: every time I try to start it up, it gives me the black screen with the options of "start windows normally" or "repair windows automatically" Choosing "Start windows normally" results in it showing the windows startup screen, then reverting back to the "start windows normally/repair windows automatically" options. "repair windows automatically" results in thinking for an extended period of time followed by "windows could not be repaired automatcially. click shut down to shut down your computer"

I pulled everything off the new mobo and reconnected it back to the old mobo... it gives me the "start windows normally/repair windows automatically" options, but windows will actually start when using the old mobo..... which leads me to believe it is possibly a hardware conflict between the new mobo and hard drive.

The short answer is that you have an OEM license. It is good fpr the original set up, but when you changed the MOBO, it cahnged a critical part of the hardware profile and Windows thinks you are tryng to install it in a different machine. There may be a worlaround on this, but I am not quite sure of what it may be. The only other option is buying another copy of the OS and installing it.

Reinstall Windows from scratch, call MS to release your key. Tell them the motherboard died, and you were forced to replace it. Tell them a direct replacement was not available. They should release your key for use on the new board.

Hopefully they'll be kind enough to do that.
