my upconversion dvd player has TERRIBLE picture,suggestions?

i have a 32" panasonic tc-lx700 lcd tv and i had been using an old dvd player with composite video. i got a samsung upconversion dvd player and hooked it up using HDMI. i put in the departed to see how much better it was, and it was terrible, the picture was grainy and way worse than my old dvd player. i thought it might have been the dvd so i tried goodfellas, and the same result. i had it playing at 720p. is there something i need to change, or is it really that bad?
