My approach is fairly simple. If I’m put on hold, turn on the speakerphone and continue doing what I was doing previously, or find something that needs to be done within range of the phone. When the party finally gets to you, start recording the conversation. The recording is handy if you get into a he said-she said situation. Its also handy in proving to some companies that their phone representative is a technical idiot (as in Dell and HP, for a couple) They generally always announce that they are recording on their side, so I have no problem announcing the same on my side.

Everytime that I find myself in the satanic "Press 1 for......" I simply press Zero. That's the fastest way to speak to a living/breathing human.
