It is odd that most of the suicides by hangings were done to loners. They are easy targets for killers that want to stage a suicide. The computer Wiz most likely picked up scandalous information that was going to be used to get lower jail time. He should have protected himself by never being alone.

It's no one's fault but Swartz's, that after stealing, he got got feet and couldn't cope with the heat.
OK, so he gave the papers back. So what? If I rob a bank - then give the money back because I get caught, will they let me off?

" ....punish an alleged crime that had no victims....."
Wrong on two counts: it was not an "alleged" crime", he did it and admits it. As for "no victims", how was MIT/JSTOR going to get subscription money after Swartz posted the docs for free?

Yes, I know, left wing loonies want everything to be free ......
To disagree without being disagreeable is the art of debate. Simply because one has a strong opinion, it does not necessarily make an alternative opinion less valid.

There is no honor in suicide. You are simply giving up. If you have something to fight for and give up to commit suicide, how are you some kind of hero.

He did some great things. He also did some criminal things. The problem is that his legacy will be that of someone who killed himself when things got tough.

Not hero material.

I have seen WAY TOO MANY comments that Swartz's suicide was staged; someone else killed him to shut him up, or any such malarkey.

Is it such a stretch of the imagination that he took the cowards way out? Has anyone considered he may have seen his future as the prison [censored]?
He was a computer nerd; what chances would he have in prison?

He hacked and stole but didn't want to accept the consequences for his actions.
always be just.

The article said:

"Although Aaron had no formal affiliation with MIT, I am writing to you now because he was beloved by many members of our community and because MIT played a role in the legal struggles that began for him in 2011," MIT president L. Rafael Reif said in a statement on Sunday.

Here is the full note, you truncated in the article:
