So are these playthings or has someone made real use of the microPCs (or whatever they're classed as)?

To answer your question. No, they are no simple play things. While they are low power and they are not going to be playing many modern games, they do H.264 ( video ) files and HD 1080p video playback vary well. They also can power old style BBS systems, FTP server,web server and a host of other applications.

They are best used in command line, but the Graphical interface runs acceptably and when in graphical interface mode it makes an ok web surfing system, though there is still work to be done to get plugins like flash to work.

For the most part, your limited in what you can do with it only by your imagination. I got mine on the 7th and Im still evaluating its use for things like VOIP. All in all, for what it is and the power it runs at, it is an impressive system.
