I am still a beginner at pc care so I could really use some guidance here. I believe my laptop has a virus because I keep getting promptings to download some .mtd file that starts with sm and some numbers. I canceled the offer to download a few times and yet it keeps popping back up. So I put my computer in safe mode and ran Microsoft Essentials and Avast. Then I ran Malware Bytes and a trial version of Web Root and none of these programs have picked up on any viruses. Is it possible that all four of these antivirus programs are still missing the virus? What should I do? My desktop crashed recently too and I believe due to the same kind of thing. My husband likes to play online games and after recently ridding 7 infections off the desktop and lap top yesterday I realized almost all of them are coming from that site he likes to play on. So now he knows and he wont be playing those games anymore, but I am out one computer and trying to salvage this lap top. Any tips and can anyone answer my question and let me know how likely it is that those four antivirus programs were unable to find a virus? Thanks!

What site does he play on? You might want to look it up on sites like this: mywot.com

Also, I know others might disagree with this, but I don't trust a machine if it's ever been infected before (unless you've reinstalled the operating system).

Hey Samantha !

Welcome to PCWorld Community.

Yes, we seldom agree with Brian's conclusions LOL!

Now, you said both your PCs have been infected and none of the scanners have picked up any offending programs.

Could we know which of the PCs you'd like to salvage and give us more details on it. (OS , 32 or 64bit, name and PC number , how long have you owned it)

It might be that one of these infections is a recurring infection meaning, it will re-install itself after it has been removed.

Some are very smart at hiding their paths from our usual scanners and will need an in-depth cleaning. This will involve

lots of work and in the end Brian might be right this time.

But, before we get there, answer my questions and we will go from there.

Hello,

I do not claim to understand .mtd files but a quick look at google
http://www.google.co...iw=1536&bih=698
seems as if it is not a virus.
You ran trusted scanners and you did great to run them in safe mode.
I am not convinced you have a virus but an annoying program.
Is it needed for game sounds?
The crash could had been caused by all the scanners installed even if you used one at a time.

What has been recently installed?
Did you try a system restore to a time prior to all this activity?
