Isn't this just another example of an "all-in-one" being just a collection of compromises put into a spiffy package? This holds true for hardware, software, and Operating Systems.

Pretty much, Tsar. The extremes to which the Alpha is willing to go show how much compromise is generally accepted.

I'm a bit confused. Why would a "serious" gamer want an all-in-one to begin with? The concerns of such users have always been high-end performance and ability to upgrade in between full replacement system purchases. The all-in-one form factor doesn't lend itself to that model.

All-in-ones are geared toward space saving convenience in the same way laptops are geared toward portability. Just as no one in their right mind would never use a hammer for a screwdriver's job, desktops, laptops, tablets, and all-in-ones each have their specific uses.

I hate it when company's try to make there desktops as thin as possible. It doesn't really do anything, You are looking at the screen 90% so you don't even notice how thick a all-in-one is. Not to mention making it thinner makes it weaker and more expensive.

The Alpha is really expensive you failed to note that. Put in an i7 and other high end stuff and the cost quickly grows to $3000 and up.

I just can't imagine gaming without a custom built DESKTOP, nothing else.

All-in-Ones have a lot of opportunities. It is about time the shape of computers changes for good (the tower desktop has changed very little since 1990; probably the only thing that hasn't changed in computing in 20+ years). There are significant cost savings to not having a large bulky tower. The problem is that companies are afraid to make All-in-Ones a little larger so they could improve airflow and use desktop components instead of laptop components. Even if they were as large as the old CRT monitors it would drastically reduce the cost of a regular or gaming computer.

As far as being upgradable it is important to remember that not only do the majority of computer owners NOT upgrade components but having components not soldered on and having empty slots adds significant cost to the computer.

This article is incorrect as the late 2012 Apple 27 imac have the option to equip the Nvidia GTX 680MX which is even more powerful than the Nvidia GTX 680M , thus almost reaching the performance of a desktop GTX 670 in a slim, all in one design.
