Linux: $0
OSX: $20
Windows: $200
And Microsoft wonders why everyone pirates their software instead of paying for it...really?

Practical market share:
Linux: 1%
OS-X: 5%
Windows: 90%
Other: 4%

Seems to me that the initial costs means quite little in the long run.

I've had exactly the same experiences with Dell laptops... (sans Win 8 install issues...) Dell's storage drivers (AHCI vs. SATA) are flaky at best!

Also the same with Win 8 "upgrades"...

My respects to you.

Well, ronin (cute nickname) -- we'll see. The 6530 arrived Monday and the 6510 arrives today (Tuesday, early am as I write). I didn't yet do the F2 setup on the 6530, because I've been wrestling with WINDOWS PROBLEMS, naturlich, since about 8pm. It's now nearly 2:30 am, and I have my other computer unplugged, hoping that the usual 'update' which disables some aspect of the machine, will clear itself out.

ADOBE READER SUCKS; it crashed my machine again. Problem is, you can't refuse its updates. Now even Mozilla prevents its browser from operating if you don't update that accursed program. Every time Reader updates, it wipes out my preferences and puts in a bunch of junk that makes it not work. Mind you, I have Acrobat, and don't need the Reader. This latest update has some bad infusion with Internet Explorer, so it and Mozilla don't get along. So now my main computer is disabled.

But if it's not Adobe, it's Java or Real Player or Mozilla or something else. Mozilla decided to just interfere with a long video upload, so I spent three hours trying to figure out why my uploaded video wouldn't play. Why? Oh, because Mozilla without telling me, just decided to make it so. Turns out Mozilla didn't like the Java on the machine, but who told me Java needed updating? And then there's STUPID ADOBE 11, which trashed the browser also. A few weeks back, it was Chrome, which will no longer run on my main machine, just as Real Player all of a sudden won't run, though I did nothing to change the programs -- except it updated itself, then promptly couldn't work afterwards.

So at least in this cold world, I can swap out hard drives in the Dells. I've bought six computers since June; three desktops, three laptops, five of them Dells. Hope at least one of them doesn't crash with WINBLOWS every day. Will just move from one to the next, after each crash, like I'm doing now. Sheesh.

I hate to think of the problems Win8 will create, but baby those removable hard drives will make life easier. :)

Well, ronin (cute nickname) -- the 6530 can't work except in RAID mode. Some say it's a problem in Windows 7 requiring RAID to boot.

Alternatively, even Mozilla prevents its browser from operating if you don't update that accursed Adobe Reader. Every time Reader updates, it makes Acrobat go crazy, wipes out all my preferences, etc.

Yet Mozilla wrecked my video upload due to the above, sans warning: I spent three hours trying to figure out why.

A few weeks back, it was Chrome that crashed on that famous Friday reported in the news; it will no longer run on my main machine, just as Real Player all of a sudden won't run, promptly couldn't work after its own update.

So I move from one crash to the next. Hate to ponder the problems Win8 creates.

Problems with Windows 8? What problems?

I've got personal knowledge, by extensive daily use of:

  • Dell Latitude E6520
  • Custom-built HTPC
  • Dell Studio 15
  • Custom-built gaming system
  • Asus Zenbook

And 6. the same codebase in Windows 2012 Server running in a custom-built server system.

With absolutely zero issues at all. And I've been running Windows 8 since Sep 2011, more than a year ago, from updating all the previews to the latest RTM.

Not to mention that all people in my sphere of influence are also running Windows 8, and all are satisfied, even delighted!

So either you are doing something wrong with your hardware, or you don't know what you are doing? The third option would be unthinkable?

Probably doesn't know what it is doing. Considering it uses RealPlayer! ;)
