hello forums,

I have 2 internal hard drives one with xp and the other w7. D and C respectively.

Can i use windows 7 to backup each of these seperately and in turn restore these from an image file.

Hi craig, and welcome to the forums,
You can use Win7's Backup and Restore feature to create and store a system image on the XP drive, and you would be able to restore from it. However, I don't think XP has the same feature, and you wouldn't be able to use Win7 for an image of XP. This would probably do the job:

I don't think you can image to the same drive, unfortunately.

That is correct. Even if you put it on a separate partition you won't be able to access it when doing a system repair (I found this out the hard way).

Hi, Craig.

Assuming you can access the XP drive (ie, read its files) when in Windows 7, you can back both of them up with the Windows 7 backup program--including image backups.

But I strongly recommend that you don't back each drive to the other one. Your backup media should not be inside your computer, but physically separate from it.

thanks everyone for the advice . i decided to go with Acronis true image.

and backing up to a seperate drive.

i have a 2tb external, there were a lot of different versions (free), but they came with limitations , so i never could start,
or complete the backups.

so i went with a paid version of Acronis.
