I was recently given a REAL Original XP w/activation code. This is a pre-SP1 version. Do I have to install SP1 & SP2 & SP3 in order, OR does SP3 contain all of SP1 & SP2 in it & I only need to install SP3?

Thanks!

This link should answer all your questions:

The Cliff's Notes version is that you will need to have at least SP1 installed before you can install SP3.

Yep, that answers my question. This isn't a problem because I also have Real XP SP1/SP2/SP3 disks.

Sounds like you're set. I still have an original XP Pro (with packaging!) that I won't let go of, although I did finally toss Win95, 98, Me, and 2000.

If you use those discs, make sure they're of the exact same version (Home/Pro/Media Center) and distribution type (Retail/OEM/Volume), as otherwise your license key won't be accepted. (unfortunately, XP was particularly strict about the distribution type - with Vista and later, it doesn't seem to matter) Your best bet is to install SP1 using the disc it came with, and then SP3. (on an XP SP1 copy I have, I found that I could just go directly to SP3 - didn't need SP2)

I've never had a problem starting with SP1 and then getting all the upgrades online. I have the SP1 disks and an OEM I have't used yet. Now that WIN7 has caught up with where I was when XP did it all, I keep it backed up at each update. Besides the initial install taking 40 minutes, the updates took just as long on a cable internet (18 Mbps) modem. I backed things up at each stage of the build as Mr Murphy has a habit of showing up when things get the most involved. This can lead to a stack of disks but when first installing new hardware, things may not work well and you'll need a fall back position to get the OS to properly recognize and assign registry entries. Some of those newer drivers may take a search through the disk but it depends on where in the install or update the new info resides.

Are you saying that XP SP1/SP2/SP3 are different for each flavor of XP? My XP SP1/SP2/SP3 disks don't say anything about being for any specific version of XP.

I prefer to update XP via. Service Pack disks. I have the fastest internet avail. in my city & on a Good day (& my ISP Isn't down), I can get approx. 220Kbs data transfer rate. On a Bad day, my data transfer rate is Sub-Dial Up!!!!! I'd straight up screwdriver murder an old lady, for a 18Meg/sec data rate. I have updated XP OL before, but it takes approx 10 days to get all the updates & that's IF my ISP is UP that long.

No, it's the Retail/OEM/Volume (you likely don't have a copy of the last one).

I think you should install only Windows XP Sp3. It has all good features.

I agree on a Virgin computer.

But I have other XP computers that need Upgrading. I'll keep them alive as long as I can, because I can no longer afford to upgrade, on my retireee budget!

I think you are confusing an "upgrade", which means changing to a newer version of Windows, such as "upgrading" from Vista to 7, which I did on my laptop and had to pay for the "upgrade" disks, which could only be used on one machine, and an "update", which means a service pack for a given Windows version that is free for as many different machines that already have valid licenses. So, you should be able to use the same service pack disks on all your XP machines, provided they all have the same version, such as Home or Pro. Even if the service pack disks are complete versions, they should be capable detecting the existing installation and use the same license. I've always just updated online rather than using disks, so I may be wrong, but at least it's worth giving it a try. I have a desktop computer with an OEM install of XP Home, and hope it lasts forever, because it can run a lot of old 16 bit Windows and DOS programs that won't run on my Win 7 laptop.

I thought referring to my original Mickeysoft Service Pack Disks as SP1, SP2, & SP3 clearly explained what kind of disks I had. Clearly I was wrong.

I'm sure that in your country, you have fast internet & can update your computers OL fairely quickly. I have the fastest internet service avail. in my city. On a Very Good day, my DL data transfer rate is 220Kbs. On a Bad service day, my DL data transfer rate goes as low as 12Kbs. Do you remember 12Kbs dial-up modems? Try updating all your computers OL @ 12 - 220Kbs!!!

Hi. I have and it took some 5.5 hours to get it done for SP2 with dial up. You may be able to get a disk form Microsoft with SP3 for whatever version of XP you have, or search online for a disk.

You could also use slipstream to create a disc that has the patches already. That's what I did. This will save time in future if need to reinstall.

Go to your local library and download the SPs you need to a thumb drive.
Assuming they have access to high speed.

Is that possible for you?

I do remember dial up.
Hopefully something better is in your future.

LOL......City libraries in my country do not have computers. People can't even check Out books. The books are Read-IN only!

But referring back to my original post, I already have Original Mickeysoft XP SP1, SP2, & SP3 disks.
