As a Linux Mint user, I prefer the simplicity of the Cinnamon desktop. I think that there's always a place for that kind of traditional environment.
In that regard, computers are like motorcycles: You can buy a Kawasaki Ninja if you want to look like a time traveling cosmonaut, or you can buy a Royal Enfield if you want to look like you just discovered Tut's tomb. Both are brand new, both look completely different, and both work just fine.

Also working with Mint's Cinnamon on a thumb drive, it's elegant and maturing rapidly (currently version 1.6) for a fairly new environment. Article is interesting for contrasting recent innovations in desktop/laptop oriented interfaces with the new touchscreen offerings that can seem both intrusive and restrictive on older hardware.

Apart from developers and a certain breed of operating system fanchildren, most users of the traditional desktop/laptop configuration have not been much interested in OSs since Mac and XP finally provided reliable ones. On the other hand, the touchscreen is still in its infancy, open to a lot of innovation (and error) for while yet.
