Personally my problem with the Wii U "is" the new gamepad controller. The beauty of the Wii was the simplicity of the controller and that it mimicked my hand movement. Now you have a 2-handed controller you're required to hold AND watch while playing a game. Plus, you have to now become a "joystick jockey" to run this gamepad controller. Sorry, but it's no longer a simple or desirable experience to me, so why would I buy one? If I'm required to become a joystick jockey, I'll wait for the next xbox that will clearly offer better hardware for that style of gaming.

And what's with the "miiverse"?! Seriously, they spent time on a ridiculously child looking social networking thing that nobody wants or will use? It's time Nintendo got past the "child" games and annoying Mario cartoon craap and built a grownup console for grownups to use!

Miiverse is extremely popular, you might know that if you had actually seen or used a Wii U.

I purchased one for Xmas, and it is now FAR more used than the PS3 - that surprised me. I figured it would just be a few games to keep my 7 year old happy.

Contrary to your comment, new gamepad controller is fantastic, and the miiverse is (and I had NO interest in it originally) quite fun.

Being able to play some games offscreen while my wife watches TV is huge.

At the moment I'm playing ZombiU and The Cave, and have finished Little Inferno. My daughter is just starting to read and LOVES ScribbleNauts where she needs to read and spell, so that (other than being continuously asked ... "how do I spell ..." ) has been fantastic.

Nintendo Land and the asynchronous gameplay and co-op play have been wonderful.

You clearly haven't had much playtime with a Wii U for a bit, and it is just as clear as a result that you don't know what you are talking about.

The 3DS is still struggling? Uh... No. Last time I read it was still outselling the DS in terms of looking at the same point within the DS life time. It's sold almost 30 million units within 3 years. That's not that bad.

And Wii U, it sold 3.06M units in 1 1/2 months, which is great. Not even the 360 or PS3 hit those numbers after being out for that amount of time.
