Yup, I do all those things, except defrag, since I only use an SSD.

Am surprised they didn't mention Advanced System Care 6 - one of the best (if not "the" best) PC utility around . . . and it's free.

you mean the one from China - that was said to have stolen code from a US developer, and I suspect of trying to infiltrate users PCs to enable Chinese snooping ? Read the reviews - and see if you can pick which ones are fake - I'll suggest 99% of the positive ones - real ones tend to say 'corrupted my PC'

Revo Uninstaller will also do the trick; it works much like PC Decrapifier with some extra features. Happy cleaning!

Good advice.

For everything beyond "CCleaner" and a good antivirus/antimalware product, try Auslogics "BoostSpeed" (much more comprehensive than is discussed in this article). I bought it for a one-time $30 in 2007 (ver. 4.2). It continues to run perfectly to this day.

It has kept my XP Pro system clean and in peak operating condition ever since -- and is largely responsible for teaching me how the OS really works. It is a package of many tools that walk you through the parts of the system that really affect how it runs.

Try Soluto for startup management. Also manages browser addons. Free.

Nice article, however, I wish it would have included directions for Windows XP along with the operating systems. Some of us given this economy have not had a chance to upgrade.

I wonder how many of the programs mentioned have portable versions that one can put on a flash drive in order to trouble shoot a friend's system.

CCleaner is one of the best tools I have used. I currently have Kaspersky Pure 3.0 running which blocks A LOT of garbage but there are tools in CCleaner that are not included in any AV software (at least that I can find). Malware Bytes is a very close contender with CCleaner. I guess everyone has a special preference in what works for them and their own needs.
