That sounds bad design on the page developer's part; it's very easy to specify what form field should be in focus next with the html "tabindex" attribute, even if the fields are all over the place on the page. Exactly right! It seems that some web designers set up their input fields without adequate thought, especially when some fields are side by side rather than in one column. It's a little aggravating to hit TAB expecting to go to the Last Name field, only to watch the cursor drop down a line to the Address field. State and county government websites seem to have lot of problems in this regard, not to mention possibly being run on 386x machines and a dialup connection. lol

Yep!

How presumptuous to declare we aren't using something when many of us, including myself, have made regular use of the tab key for years. I was hoping it'd be something interesting that I didn't know about.

It amazes me how many people who design online forms don't know about the tab key. Often a form has been edited by someone who dragged the fields around and ended up with the tabbing order completely illogical. In one recent case, I kept tabbing, but the cursor never, ever stopped on one particular field.

What the author fails to realize is WHY is this method works.

It is part of the Federal requirement for any program to be certified for use in Federal agencies. Section 508 is a federal standard and any company that wants to sell their software or services to the government has to comply with this law. It addresses a variety of issues to insure accessibility for those with vision and other impairments.

The author would do well to know how federal laws affect software and hardware development. The law has a number of specifications that developers and manufacturers have to comply with if they expect to sell the to federal agencies.

"Now you can keep your fingers on the keys where they belong! "

Exactly! I type all day for an attorney. Absolutely hated it when they took the function keys from the left side of the keyboard and moved them to the top. We used to be able to use them from memory without moving our hands from the keyboard, but now everything is geared for a mouse. Hate it!
