Windows 9 you say, Apple better move up their game plan, looks like MS is catching up! As more dissatisfied Windows user become the more OS X user sign on. Thanks to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for driving the herd our way!

WinTard I'm sure you will agree with me? If most Windows user feel that Microsoft has taken away their beloved desktop, Apples' Desktop will satisfy there needs.

I run my computer with 2 displays with a number of programs running at the same time. It's very productive. In OS X "Lion" Apple has provided a full screen mode, but made it a use selectable option.

Like Apple, if Microsoft had only offered the full screen mode as an option, there would not be this problem in the first place. Don't you agree?

Going all out on the "Metro" UI is an interesting place to plant your flag. I just can't see it as a successful move on a practical level.

Sure, change isn't bad. But that doesn't mean all change is good either. Without the ability to open multiple windows and move them around as I like I cannot do my job. Could I learn to do it another way? Probably, but why? So Microsoft can push their tablet UI on everyone? I just don't find that a compelling reason.

And guess what? There are literally millions, tens of millions (and probably hundreds of millions) of business users who agree with me. Yes, tablets and touch are the bold new technology, but why should the world pay through the nose to change how they do work? Does a touch UI make work easier, more efficient? On the contrary, it has been amply demonstrated that this new UI is an efficiency killer.

I do not see any gain to this massive change where it counts, linux may yet see its day.

People on MS don't generally want to move to Apple, as Apple isn't really that functional, compared to MS. The apps drive the OS chosen. That will remain true. If MS is dropping the ball, Apple certainly isn't picking it up. Linux appears to be trying to emulate what MS is dropping, and hopefully will continue to do so. But Linux isn't yet ready for prime-time, either.

The real problem is that MS dropped the ball on watching kernel structure, with XP. I just learned that today, and thus posted a new topic called 'Where Windows went wrong' in the 'Windows' forum here. So the problem is for MS to fix. Now I empathize with MS. But still, we business users are left in the lurch, trying to cope with our decades of files which are on the XP or older platforms, how to preserve those files.

So whoever can well adapt to past backwards-compatibility the most, will win business, and make a ton of money. Rightly. Meanwhile, for the casual user and the dingbat who thinks poking a finger at a screen is somehow 'modern', there is Win8. I understand why MS is catering to them, too.

Windows 8 is not practical. People are not walking around on the street with their laptop and tapping apps. What about people who want to write a paper while looking at microsoft word and the internet at the same time and arrange them on the screen in different ways. It takes out all customization and ease of use. I always have multiple applications open at the same time and with this that option is gone. They are driving customers away by trying to be mobile savvy. If I want apps I will use a tablet, but a desktop is not a tablet. They are made for many different reasons. They are going to isolate a huge amount of potential buyers and I know I will be using windows 7 for the forseeable future.

the opinion of one guy..Hobbs.. in this article took over the article.. if anyone thinks that Win 8 is practical you are living in a 'dream world'.. or just a MS lackey .. as for a touch screen while doing image editing on my part..i don't want a bunch of grimy fingerprints or smudges all over my monitor...

you will see.. and I said this from the very beginning with Win 8.. MS tried to force feed and shove this interface down the throats of millions of users.. now they are scrambling to make things right... they lost their credibility... Win 8 =Vista 2 not in format but in it being an abomination.. they tried to make the big bucks on Win 8 and it blew up in their face... I don't want or need a 'tablet interface'.. the speed I am sure is there with Win 8 .. but does it really matter if it's milli-micro seconds faster to load than Win 7.. I think not..

it is fun watching MS scramble.. it is laughable when an article touts a guy who wants the change and he is in the minority... change for the sake of change is laughable.. all MS did with Win 8 was to force people to consider switching to Apple ..or Linux.. what were they thinking...

I'll stick with Win 7 until MS gets it's act together once again...

"It's too early to call Windows 8 either a success or a failure..."

This article was posted on Feb. 7. It's now April 12 and we know the answer:

FAIL.

" anyone who says Windows 8 is bad is an idiot. Ah, paid MicroTroll standard claim No. 2! My favorite! Here, let me post the full list to save you and your paid compadres the trouble: I'll pre-post the most common of your taking-points right now so you don't have to go to the trouble of cutting and pasting them from the MicroShill Talking-Points Web Site: 1. Anyone who says they don't like Windows 8 has never used it. 2. Anyone who doesn't like Windows 8 is stupid. 3. Anyone who doesn't like Windows 8 is "afraid" of change. 4. I've upgraded my 8 year old laptop that has 1 GB ram and 80 GB HD with Windows 8 and it runs 10 times faster than with XP. 5. I bought a Windows 8/Window RT device for each and every member of my family and they ALL simply LOVE it! 6. Windows 8 is EXACTLY like Windows 7, only better! 7. Metro UI is REALLY the same as the Start Menu. 8. Poor acceptance of the Windows 8/Windows RT/Metro UI is all the fault of the "Apple Fanboi" and "Windows 8 hater" writers and blog posters. Their negative comments are what have caused the average non-technical consumer who never reads these web sites in the first place to stay away from Windows 8 in droves. If only the "press" had given Windows 8 a "fair" shake, it would have been a roaring success (even though the public doesn't read the tecnical press in the first place). 9. I'm a business consultant and ALL of my business clients have been clammering for Windows 8 and they ALL just love it when I install it and they now realize how much FUN computing can be! 10. I'm in IT and NONE of our employees have trouble learning Windows 8, and they LOVE it! 11. You must be old! 12. My 75 year old mother and my 5 year old girl are running Windows 8 with no problems. 13. You are obviously a troll!

It will only get worse my friend

Here is another very viable option.

Switch to Mac OS on your laptop and desktop and iOS on your phone and tablet.

Apple has the sense to put usable options in place. And at least in the phone, tablet and laptop world build world class hardware that no one else can touch with the right OS for the hardware...

I agree that ditching the desktop in the next version would be a stupid idea because the new metro apps are inferior to equivalent desktop versions with the exception of maybe a few such as the Netflix app being better than accessing the site through the browser. I just can't see myself replacing programs that have worked and been developed for years with a bunch of single purpose micro-programs. The fact that they run full screen or 2/3rds 1/3rd split defeats the purpose of Windows in the first place of having multiple applications overlapping eachother or side by side at any size ratio. It's almost like going back to Windows 1.0 before multiple windows on screen was possible.

Yes, it is Win 1 reincarnated. Maybe some of those that like Win 8 were not around to remember, that Win 8 looks just like Win 1.

Yes, we were around. And apparently we have some better memory than others. Because Windows 1 could not do 1/100000th of what Windows 8 does.

I embrace change, and am usually delighted to start using any kind of new software, or hardware. That being said, W8 is very disappointing. I got a new laptop with W8 RT about four months ago, and have had nothing but trouble with it. Maybe it's an RT problem, but I was so frustrated with it that I eventually wiped the laptop clean, and installed W7 Ultimate...Love my laptop now!!!

You can't be serious.

How did you get a laptop with an OS that has only been released for tablets? And if it was Windows RT, you couldn't have installed Windows 7.

At least keep the trolling logical.

Brian, step back and think about this a moment. Windows Rt ONLY runs on ARM based tablets. Windows 7 ONLY runs on x86 cores. The Yoga 11 is Tegra 3 based. No Windows 7 on there.

I'm responding to the argument that you can't get a laptop with a tablet-only OS. Obviously Windows 7 won't run on an ARM device...
