Oh, come on. This "shortage" was a deliberate, cynical attempt to create an illusion of a sell out. Reports say that many (most?) stores got one or two units and that many got NONE. This, on the BIG opening day of sales? I don't think so.

Hurray! The Surface Pro is an amazing success! It sold out within hours across the nation! Oh, and now it's a CRISIS! GIVE ME A BREAK! WHAT A PATHETIC PUBLICITY STUNT!

Such claims are patently absurd. Yet THAT'S what's going to be reported on the brain dead alphabet network news and the bird-cage-liner press this evening! (NBC is already reporting: A SELL OUT!)

(So, does ANYBODY in ANY part of the press ASK QUESTIONS anymore, or does everyone just edit press releases? For instance: "How MANY Surface Pros were available for sale at retail stores, Microsoft Stores and online today?" and "How MANY sold today?" How hard would that be to do?)

BTW, anybody want to bet that suddenly a virutally unlimited number of Surface Pros will be available within a couple of days?

It's such a shame... There are people out there (like me) that want to support the Surface Pro and they pull a stunt like this shame on the strategy team behind this epic disaster!

Funny. I was at the mall on Market St. in San Francisco today and found a queue of about 25 people corralled around some stanchions awaiting their turn to enter what appeared to be a Microsoft kiosk set up, supplied with all of their new toys. About 20 or so gadget access points were available (all more or less empty). Two customers were at the check out points. About 30 microsoft employees were milling about doing nothing. They were purposefully creating a buzz around their products. Their desperation was palpable.

A couple local Staples only received a single 64GB model each, same goes for local Best Buys in my city...so yeah obviously they "sold out"...sold out of units that did not even exist lol

Actually, I agree with you. I'm not a google/apple fanboi as so many think. I've exclusively used Microsoft products since Windows 95. I support Microsoft products for a living. l am, however, royally pissed off at the clueless management in charge of Microsoft right now because they are driving their products and the company into the ground with insane decisions producing horrific crap like Metro UI, Windows RT, Windows 8, and "The Ribbon", things that most people hate and/or do not want. Microsoft has obviously abandoned the one market they have a lock on, namely the enterprise, in pursuit of the mass market for computing toys. Microsoft appears to be headed by a clueless bunch of old farts who pretend to be hip by listening to 25-somethings who have never done anything digital other than tweet, text, and talk, and therefore think that's all anybody else does with an IT device.

Hater's Hate. Less than a month ago everyone was saying this was going to be a big time flop. Can you really fault microsoft when so much negative attention and comments are posted on everything they try to do. I would have made a conservative release as well. I remember when the original IPhone went on sale is this really worse than having a device in your hand that you can't use.

Yeah, you're right.

I can just see the discussion at Microsoft World Headquarters:

"Gee, we just spent two billion dollars designing and managing this thing and a billion dollars advertising it, how many should be ship to each store for the grand opening?"

"Oh, I don't know. One or two?"

"Yeah, that sounds about right."

Betrayed? After spending months following, reading, studying everything about the Pro, I feel absolutely betrayed. I have defended MS and the Pro on several forums and comment boards. I have talked to all my friends about why they should buy one. I believed MS when they said it available on Feb 9. I pre ordered at Best Buy on the first day it was announced. I was informed that I was one of the first in line. Then just to be sure, I pre ordered at a second store. I could hardly wait I was so excited to have one.

And then I find out that Best Buy only had two at one store and none (zero) at the other store. UNBELIEVABLE!!! In a panic, I called every BB and Staples in the state and no one had any. I am very disappointed that MS would deceive at this level. If you know that you are only supplying a single device or two per store, then say so. But to intentionally announce that it would be available on the 9th, and not have it, that is just inexcusable.

For those doing the happy dance, congratulations, you either knew someone or just got lucky. I hope you enjoy it. For the rest of us, WE FEEL BETRAYED.

Shame on you, MS.

I have no clue what you guys are talking about. I stopped at the local Microsoft store (Oakbrook IL) and picked up 10 of the surface pros. I convinced my employer that is was a good choice for your field staff :) They said the surface pro had been selling well but they still had a few in stock, this was around 2:30. So I'm not entirely sure that Microsoft purposely short changed anyone, maybe supplies varied by region and anticipated demand.

Shame on you, MS.

MS delivers a large quantity to Best Buy corporate. Best Buy decides how they are going to divvy them up. Blame Best Buy, not Microsoft.

Betrayed, are you live in reality!? This is not that easy task to secure all security holes so bad gus wont be able to quickly find out how to gain acces to each devisce. Can you image how Windows is important to succes with war on cyber cryminals who stole songs and video to trficing it to play it in countraies with export restrictions like Cuba North Corea or Gaza.

I live close to Oakbrook too, I can for almost free show your emlpoyer how to turn the screen 180 radians up so they will lay flat with good wiew on keybord. It is hot hack - imroving acuracy in typing. If your industry require precision (aerospace automobile or acounting) chck budgetary restrains for fully utilise futures.
