Foxit has handy marking/highlighting as well as field entry. It seems stable and good in current version, but has tried weird marketing tricks and the FireFox plug in gone wonky but I've uninstalled Adobe Reader in favor of it.

Tried Nitro a few years ago but it was real slow, may have improved. Print-to-PDF apps are free and make a full Acrobat replacement unnecessary for non-professional uses.

I love Nitro! I rarely need anything printed out, but occasionally there will be a web page that I may not be able to access later and I would like to keep a copy of it (such as receipts for orders placed and payments made online). All I have to do is use the "Print" option that almost always exists on these pages, and I have a PDF of that page that I can save and easily find later if needed.

Nitro PDF all the way! tried most of them and Nitro has the best all around features and functions. I eventually bought the Pro version and love its power in converting documents and making PDF's. Lot's of good support and regular updates. Highly recommend.

I use PDF-XChanger Viewer, which also allows markup, except on locked pdfs. Tried Foxit a long time ago but didn't like their pushy ads and especially didn't like the fact I couldn't uninstall it. Not sure if that was their fault, but the uninstaller just didn't work. I assume they have fixed that by now, but have no reason to try them again.

PDF EXCHANGE VIEWER Is the best. I've tried Nitro, Foxit, and Sumatra. PDF Exchange Viewer is great because of all the editing features it provides ... Highlight, Typewriter, Notes, Text Boxes, OCR Conversion, Callouts, Drawing Tools, and my favorite: Snapshot. I love the Snapshot tool which acts like a focused screen print that can then be pasted into Word, Libre, etc. PDF Exchange Viewer is fantastic!

have used both foxit and Nitro. Nitro is far and away my favourite, particularly for its easy integration into firefox, but foxit is a good bet if all you need to do with PDFs is look at them and occasionally fill in a form.

I think your life is a little bit simple if you can ditch Adobe Reader altogther. My life is. However, it's not easy when you have a group. Adobe Reader is super-bloated. I have used Foxit for many years and installed it for others whenever I can. But every now and then it will not work with certain type of editable PDF files, especially if you need to open and fill in certain PDF forms generated by governments and banks. So you have to keep Adobe installed.

Used to use Foxit a long time ago, then it started popping so many ad and nag messages and "sneaky" marketing stuff that I went back to Adobe...

Will try Nitro based on the above comments.

I've been VERY happy with Nuance. Works perfectly, free and no ads.

I have found that the free PDF reader from Nuance is very capable.

It has another feature that is worth it - once you open your PDF, there is a button on the tool bar where you can click and send the PDF to Nuance.

Once you get to their site, you can specify whether you want it converted into a Word, Excel, or Powerpoint document. Nuance will then convert the PDF to the format you specify and then email it back to you.

The conversions I have had done are very good.

There is on thing to keep in mind - Nuance will only keep the converted document on their server for two hours. So, if you want the converted document, you should check your email frequently. I have found that the converted document is returned in five minutes or less.

Forget Fox-it Reader, at least if you're on XP. The free reader only generates a graphic pdf file, is not searchable. The most expensive version, Business, can't convert Word 2002 documents into pdf, sends the print-spooler into a hang. Which is depressing, because I liked Fox-it. A live human being actually answers the phone, if you call early in the morning (just about 8am their time).
