64-bit should work - the only thing is that really old games (possibly 1997 and older, older than Windows 95 for sure) may be 16-bit and so you'll need a 32-bit OS for those, not 64-bit. Generally, I just run those in a VM, as they're light enough by today's standards for the worse performance in a VM to not really be an issue. (NFS3 Hot Pursuit, for instance)

Most Windows XP apps should run okay on Windows 7, though they may need to be run as administrator or in a compatibility mode. Thankfully, you can test the compatibility modes by simply selecting "troubleshoot compatibility" from the right-click menu when an executable is selected.

Even if they don't, you can always install "Windows XP mode" which is really just a preconfigured VM image of windows XP. I've had no problems doing that for those rare apps that just won't run in Win7.

For REALLY old games, you'll want to use a dos emulator. I prefer dosbox myself for it's customizability and compatibility.

Hi and welcome,

Games released 2000 and later should be no problem but 1995... From Windows XP on DOS is out and titles such as Lemmings require an emulator or an older OS.  And, as retro games still have their fans and the visible difference is chunky graphics and resolution, it's relatively easy to play/write a Win 7/8 game that looks like, say Prehistoric.  16 bit without 16 bit, if you know what I mean. I played Prehistoric at highschool and liked it.
