Processor Cache

I was looking at upgrading my computers processor but I was just wondering what is the processor cache, because I heard about it before but could never figure out what it dose or what its for.

Primary machine: Calculator(1995 model)
Secondary machine(2004 model): ASUS mobo, pentium-2, 64mb ddr pc3200, 20Gig IDE hd.
